Timing Belt Change?

Guys I know there has been a lot of posts on this issue but here is my dilemma. I moved a couple years ago to an area where no Acura dealship is within an hour...I used to live in the DC area and got my 97 CL 2.2 automatic seviced from a dealer there regularly. I moved when I had around 90K miles and at an oil change the dealer said I should change my timing belt soon.

Now I'm up in upstate NY and my family has a friend who does our mechanic work and does a decent job...What I'd usually do was take my list of problems that the dealership says to him and he'd give me an honest opinion if its needing to get done now. Well I asked him to check the timing belt and he look at said it looked ok and I shouldn't worry about it for at least 20-30K more miles. He mentioned that it was a big job and he needed a special tool that he didn't have to get the bolt off to start the job...anyway I took his word and now I got 109K and no problems yet.

IN Albany NY there is a Acura dealer which is over an hour from me but I work up there sometimes and they sent me a card in the mail for a free oil change...I was thinking of doing it to at least have them tell me what I need to get done...I know they'll say the timing belt. So my question is how much is a normal price from a dealer for the entire job with the Water pump, ect... I've seen anywhere from $500-1200 from the dealer. My mechanic didn't seem to eager to do the job but I'm sure he would but if I get a decent deal from the dealer I might let them do it instead...Any advice is much appreciated...thanks!

drive the hour - you get a loaner anyways to rock for a while. Pohanka acura over here near fairfax had my belt job done in a few hours so you might be able to hang out in that town for a little bit.

What Price did you get?

I used to go over to the Acura in Gaithersberg when I lived in DC...I went to that Radley in Arlington VA but had a couple bad experiences with them so I drove the extra time to Gaitherberg from Alexandria, but work had me up in that area sometimes so I'd scedule to fit in with that. Anyway how much did it cost you?

850 out the door for the whole nine yards, but i'm glad the dealer did it, because the water pump and idler pulley were whining a few week afterwards, and it was all fixed for free, no having to haggle with a local shop.

The dealer quoted me $820 for timing belt, water pump, coolant flush, power steering belt replacement, A/C belt replacement, brake flush for a 3.0CL.

I'm not surprised that your mechanic didn't want to do it. There's not too many that look forward to it. There's so little room to work and taking off that rear timing belt cover is such a pain.

I suggest changing it. $800 sounds cheaper than a several thousand dollar motor if the timing belt were to break.

I had my mechanic do all belts and water pump and he only charged me 400. I kept putting it off b/c of how much the dealer wanted (900.00), but it was getting risky to keep waiting, so I went with my mechanic. I was a little nervous but it all turned out ok. And I made it to 147,00 with the original belt.

Thanks...can someone tell me

What is list of things they do on a timing belt change??? I know its water pump and Timing belt...but the dealer said its $700-800. Mentioned spark plugs...does anyone know what the Acrua Dealers are supposed to do on a timng belt change? Is there some kinda link on the internet that explains what all needs to be done...If anyone knows I'd appreciate it...Wanna take this list to my mechanic and get a quote from him for eveything. The acura dealer near me has a 15% off till end of July so gonna try and see the price difference. Thanks

Ask your service advisor again, and listen carefully.

Pretty sure to include timeing belt, serpentine belt, waterpump and gaskets associated with it. the 120 includes sparkplugs and wires and the timing belt change i'm pretty sure.

I'll try to do that

The dealer made it sound like quite a few things were taken care of outside the Timing Belt and Water pump...they were busy at the time and I didn't want to get into it with him. Anyway if anyone has had this service done recently at a dealership let me know what they all did exactly...thanks much
