Timing Belt
Timing Belt
Well the guy I purchased my car off doenst know if the timing belt, water pump etc, was replaced when he picked it up from the car auction, he got it with just over 100,000 kms, i bought it off him with 150,000kms, if it wasnt replaced would it have gone by now?
Can i bring it into a shop and can it be checked to see if it has been replaced? or is this costly??
from what i know, the timing belt is inside the engine, and this wouldnt be a quick and cheap job...

I would just get it changed, along with the water pump. Then you KNOW it was done, and you KNOW you're not risking a loss of the whole engine. Up in Canada, if you're in an area where the temps get real, real low, the interval for changing the timing belts is at 100,000kms (about 60,000 miles).
If you're talking about a $600.00 job good for AT LEAST 60,000miles, usually 105,000 in most conditions, then it's a choice between a one shot maintenance good for the foreseeable life of the car versus prematurely ending the practical life of the car with no adavance warning. I don't think there's a reasonable choice, but to do the change.
PS. Are you driving a 2.2, 2.3 or a 3.0? The intervals I mentioned are true for a 3.0 (they may vary slightly on the shorter side for a 2.2 or a 2.3).
like he said different variables would change the life of the belt...change it to be safe.
if it hasn't, don't push it. to get it checked you would have to replace the gasket to reattach the valve cover. and even then the only signs would be some cracking, or just an "old" look.
you can't really tell if some of the teeth have worn down, or even if there is a major problem elsewhere on the belt.

Have it done, ASAP....chances are it wasn't. I had mine changed at 157k....I saw the one he pulled out, it was nearly gone, I probably couldn't have gone longer than 1000 more miles on it. The ridges were coming through the other side.
It would only cost around $400 or less if you know someone.
change it anyways, i just finished rebuilding a head from a eclipse that had the timing belt break. if it wasent my friend it would have been easilly a 1000$ job, but i did it for 300$ and he bought all the parts.
after seing that im doin mine this weekend.
