Time to Re Tire

Can I put 225/50 Tires on stock 16" rims? I am considering Kumho Ecsta MX tires what experiance have any of you had with Kuhmo tires and do you think this is a good idea?

i'd be interested if you could put 225/50s on stocks - aren't our stock tires 205/55? i wouldn't know because my stock wheels are in the garage right now....

It depends on the width of the stock rims. 225s are probably the widest that will fit the width of the stock rim.

I love my Kumhos!

Quiet, great handling (even in rain).

I wouldn't go wider than 225. I have 225s on 7.5" rims.

yes you can do a 225.. it will fit (biggest you can go) but there will be tire bulge... I have 225/45 on my car with stocks... The bulge gives it an aggressive look... but its NOT always recogmended to do... reason being if you curb your tire while parking... you tearing it up!!! why you going to 50s... stock tires are 55... drop to a 40-45.... the wider tire and higher sidewall makes it look bigger!!! My 225/45s look like they are 55s.. it sucks!!! Go get like 40s and it will seem like 45/50s.. trust me... i am speaking from experience of my mistakes!

Going from 205/55 to 225/50 maintains the over all diameter of the stock wheel and tire (very close). It is important to do this in order to maintain the correct geomitry of your suspension. Changing this geomitry is asking for problems of all kinds in cluding tire ware, gas milage, speedometer accuracy and ware on your suspesion in general. The stock wheel is only 6" so I am leaning toward the stock tire size.

Thanks for all your input.

you're not going to be able to fit 225's on the stock rims. 215's is the maximum without balooning and rubbing.

I read somewhere on a tire site (Tire Rack maybe) that said 225 50s will fit b/c they have the same diameter as the stock 205 55s. I'm a little worried about the fit, tho. There's only about 1/4 to 1/2 clearance in the back between the tire and upper A arm. That's cutting it pretty close.

what they were talking about is the aspect ratio of the tire. it's going to be the same height, but too wide for the rim.

225 is pushing the limit on a 6 inch wide tire. I would stick with the 205/55 or go up to 17's.

If I go with a 215/50 or 55 my over all diameter will be a little shorter or a little taller but only by a few mm. Will this have much or any affect? Thanks again for all the input everyone. I hope to do this today or tomorrow.

I kind of wish I put 215/50/16 on instead of the 205/50 I just bought. The tires dont even stick out a little over the edge of the rim they are just flat. Otherwise I like the Falkens I just bought. I just blew one of them out on a road trip and discount tire replaced it with no questions. I reccomend them

Yea, Discount is the best. They replaced a set of tires for me that I had almost 20K on, at no cost to me. I had problems with a couple of them and they were noisie. This was on My Dorango, swoped Pirrellis for Mitchlins. I may go 215/55.

Well I was giveing props to Discount so now I got to burn em. The bastards said they had the MX in stock so I get up early this morning and go up there to get the tires and it seems they thought I was talking about the 712s. Sounds alot like MXs, right!
If they had looked up the right tire they could have ordered them on Tuesday and the would be hear by now. @#$%^^&*
