check the wires to your starter, see if they are corroded or loose. There are a lot of amps going through that wire, so if it isn't working at its best, the starter might not turn!

One custom CL
ignition switch
do this. when your car doesnt start. set your key to the II position. Take a 12gauge wire and open your hood. locate your starter. it has 2 wires. One is a constant 12v (thicker wire with a boot) and the other (thinner wire) is the signal which a faulty ignition switch kills. Jump the two. Its safe dont worry. Just dont touch an exposed wire... If the car starts or turns then your starter is ok.
I had the same exact problem. It even got me stranded. Turn the key and you may get a single click or nothing. Good luck

^^ Yeah if whacking it makes it start, your starter solenoid plunger is sticking... I am not sure how it is on the 3.0, but on the 2.X's there is a 5 sided cap with a few 6mm bolts on it. If you take that off, it will let you see the plunger / contacts. Just be careful, it may want to spring apart as soon as you do so just hold it as you take the last bolt off. Then clean it all up and put it back together. May need some dielectric lube. You can also wire brush the plunger where there are arc marks and burns on the copper and take a look inside where it goes. If the contacts are very worn away, you will need to grab that rebuild kit from toyota or a rebuilt starter. Also not sure if the rebuild kit would apply to the 3.0, your starter may be built entirely different.
