Something odd about VTEC

I was borred yesterday so I decided to rig up a VTEC light,.. I know it's ricey but I only rigged it up to see when the VTEC actually activates and to my surprise it does come on before 4k rpm when you floor it.... when you accelerate really slowly then it activates at 4k rpm,.. It even stayed activated at 2800 rpms when I floored it and released slowly....can anybody explain to me why VTEC is acting this way???

You're running at open throttle, when you accelerate slowly, it doesn't get triggered until higher rpm's I noticed this just by flooring it going up ramps and it def kicks in quicker if you open the throttle up

Vtec engages after a certain RPM and if ur more than %50 on the throttle.. It doesnt make sense to switch over if ur in a high RPM but still accelerating slowly.. or downshifting..

but dont quote me on the %%percentage..

I know,. I opened up my cluster and everthing but I didn't want to go to the trouble of sanding down the light cover and then printing out a VTEC decal....

I know it's ricey buddy,.. as I stated in the initial post. I will tear it out when I get the chance,.. now that I know what's going on with VTEC. I will use the hole when I get an alarm...

i actually dont consider it ricey, only because the light is small and not obnoxious or that noticeable.

I thought Vtec had a set engagement point, a specific RPM. usually around 5-6k depending on model. I remember on my h22a prelude, no matter what throttle setting i was at it always kicked in at 5200 rpm, because thats whats programmed in the ECU, i know the 5th gen preludes (97-01) were the same way, so dont give me that shit about the j30 being a more technologically advance engine. If you wanted it to engage earlier or later for somereason you had to get a Vtec controller of some sort such as a VAFC.

FACE IT YOUR LIGHT IS FUCKED UP OR YOUR CAR IS VTEC HAPPY. It might just be going on because your solinoid is sensing the correct oil pressure ect....Vtec is most likey not actually engaged until that ECU set cross over point.

Today, I did a few runs at WOT and it kicked in at about 5 grand every time. I actually even felt it kick in when before I could never feel it. This was only in 2nd gear though I didnt try 3rd.

vtec will kick in at different points depending on different factors.......this has been discussed before and remember not all vtec motors are the same. just because ur prelude motor did it, that doens't mean that this motor has a set engagement point as well.

I donno if this is the stupidest thing i've ever heard, but if you have your cam using your Vtec lobe at such a low RPM, your going to lose power. As NautiC so kindly deminstrated today. someone please tell me the benefit of having Vtec kick in at 3000 RPM? someone is going to have to post something if they are actually believeing that if you put petal to the metal your Vtec kicks in before the programed Vtec crossover.

HENCE THE REASON THE VAFC ALLOWS YOU TO CHANGE THIS POINT.

enjoy the read and pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease dont tell me your J30's are more advanced than the typeS or any other Vtec honda engine for that matter that it can actually sence your throttle position and adjust the vtec cross over point accordingly, just not going to happen.

Every honda engine type might have a different cross over setting, 5000K seems to be it for the J30a's i could be wrong on that though, i do have to agree with NauTiC though.

a lot of us over on the S2000 forum do this, as well. We have a light in the dash that isn't used and hook it up there. It's actually quite fun to watch.
