Small change

Well yesterday I bought some material I thought was going to wrap my woodgrain, but I decided I didn't like the color I bought.
So I wrapped my ebrake instead.
I removed the rubber cover, cut out some material which, when folded in half, looked like the shape of the brake, and sprayed that with some elmers adhesive.
I immediately wrapped up the brake cover.
The material met on the underside of the brake cover where I used 3 large clips to hold the material close to the rubber.
After an hour, I stitched the material up as close as I could, and cut off the remaining loose material.

a before picture i happened to take the other day

two shots of the new ebrake cover

Nothing spectacular, just happened because I had the material there.
I do like it a lot better though. It looks like leather and feels very nice, much better than that rubber.
My plan is to bring out the black in the interior, so it isn't so grey in there.
I think I'm going to eventually wrap the woodgrain, but I just haven't found a color i think suits it.

I like how it matches the shifter instead of the leather, nice contrast.

i got the material at a place called "JoAnn Fabrics".. just a place filled with all sorts of materials and tools for sewing and stuff like that..
the material was super cheap, less than 5 dollars for a huge strip of it.. probably something like 3.5 feet long and 1.5 feet wide.
the stitching was easy, but my friend threaded the needle and knotted the ends..

here's a pic of the underside..

you can tell that i was taking my time and being precise at the top, and by the time i got to the bottom, i just wanted to get the shit done..
i left the very top unstitched because i had to push that material in the top hole (so there would be no folds or anything) and stick this black plastic ring in there, but the button was stuck when i put the whole thing back on, so i had to pull it out some..
while pulling it out, some of the material i had shoved in there slipped out a little bit..
i have to go out there and see if i can shove it back in with a little flathead or something, but inside my car is at least 100 degrees right now, so maybe some other time..
the cover is a little misaligned here, but i can just slide it over a little and it's fine..
the other side of the material is white, so i took a black sharpie and just went right down the seam and blacked it out.. you can see some white at the top where the material came out

all in all, im happy with it.. i doubt anybody would ever put their head down and check out the underside of the brake, so im not too worried about how that stuff looks.. the misalignment is easy to adjust, and i assume shoving that top part back in will be easy too.. and from above and beside, it all looks gravy anyway.
so whatever, not too shabby for no experience with sewing or fabric or anything..

damn, i type too much

yeah, i could definitely do a better job, especially after doing it once..
this was my first time sewing anything.
it's completely tight until it gets down to the fat part of the brake..
i was originally going to make that part pretty loose because i thought that might look good, but then i started to tighten it up..
i guess i ended up somewhere in the middle with that part.
the whole thing can be adjusted a little, but it takes some pretty forceful yanking..
it doesnt just slide around or hang loose or anything (except for the bottom)
its glued right against the rubber, and the stitching is super tight.. i actually broke the thread a few times trying to get it as tight as possible.
if i had a razor or something, the trimming would be a lot better, but all i had was some crappy scissors.

you should use thick thread
stitch it from the inside then wear it around the stick and finish stitching it

yeah.. thick thread sounds good, i just used whatever was in my sewing kit.. my friend put the thread through twice so it doubled up, i guess i could put it through 3 times so it would be 4 threads thick?

i only wanted one seam, i couldnt figure out how i could stitch it from the inside without making two..
any help?

if im bored some day i might redo this since it was pretty easy
