Remote Start Questions

I was wondering if anyone has had a remote starter installed on their car. I recently purchased a Viper Responder alarm and it comes with a remote start. When i went to have it installed the alarm shop charged me $40 for a part that would override my transponder key when it is starting.
Today I get a call from the place telling me that they need a key to put into this part. I was wondering if this sounds right. From my understanding this part made it so that I did not need to leave a key inside of the car.
My other question is if I need to leave a key in the car, why do I need this part. My buddy has a Compustar in his Accord with the transponder key and he just did not buy that part and leaves a key taped inside of his styeering column.
I am I getting taken? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

its more than likely that they need the key to program the module. which is done by inserting the key into it and it learns the transponders codes. by the sound of it you have a dei viper system and the dei box that requires a key. however i don't th ink you have to keep the key in all the time. but not totally sure. hope this helps.

ok, i dont understand what this 555u thing is and what it has to do with a key. I got a viper 550esp on my car and i didnt have to give the installer any extra key. I can remote start my car, but I have to insert my key as usual two clicks so i can get it moving. But whats this "box" thing that I hear about?...like valet something? i dont get what it is

The car has an imbolizer. THis prevents the car from starting without the key in the ignition that has a matching code. Even though you can't see it on the key, there is a chip inside that has a code in it. THe transponder reciver is mounted on the key cylinder and is scanning for the code on crank. If no key is in the ignition, it won't start.

There are a couple of modules to overcome this limitation and preventing you from having to leave a key in the ignition. The 555U is a module that you insert a spare key into. It picks up the keycode from the inserted key and transmits it over a wire loop antenna that is installed around the key cylinder. This is done on demand from the remote start. There is another module that is a little more complex that requires you to wire it in line with the transponder. This module actually learns the code when you inster the key. It operates the same in the end, but you don't have to give up a key.

For you KLepTo, you might not have an imobilizer on your 97 2.2, I have no idea which cars have it. If yours does, then they probably used the learning module. I went with the 555U due to ease, and I had 3 keys so it did not hurt to give one up.
