Rear Speaker Suggestions
Rear Speaker Suggestions
Hello I have a 98 CL 3.0 with Bose Factory CD System. I was wondering if I can install some new 6x9 speakers for the rear? Does any one have any suggestions on what to buy I would like to keep everything factory if possible (no extra amp) if possible. This is a DIY project. Where can i get a wiring guide for the rear speakers? Any help any one can provide would be awesome.

So, you want to keep the stock bose system, just replace the 6x9's? Does your system have the bose amp in the trunk? That is important to note when dealing with your audio system. Just about any 6x9 will work, as long as they are not coaxial. You shouldn't need a wiring guide, I believe there's just positive and negative connections if you're just swapping out speakers. Are you trying to run new wires? If so the amp WILL come into play. As for brands, I would recommend Cirwin Vega, Blaupunkt, Diamond Audio, or a more high end speaker. Cirwin is my poison of choice.
not any 6X9 will work. I had alot of trouble fitting the ones i wanted because the mouting depth is so shallow. The wiring is very simple, just positive to positive and negative to negative. Also, you are going to get alot of people telling you what the best speakers around are so you will just have to see for yourself what you like. Personally i like Boston's, JL audio, and Audiobahn.
Thanks for the Input so far. Here are a couple of preliminary questions. I thought upon last inspection of my speakers that ther were just more than positive and negative. 1. Are the speaker connections only positive and negative? I will check this on my car tonight. If you know already let me know. 2.What about impedence or resistance conserns with BOSE? There is no extra amp in the car. From what i know the AMP is in side the CD Player in the car. This is a factory system. I will take any manufactur and model recomendations anyone is willign to offer. 3.How long is the depth I have in the reas speaker mounts?

ive got eclipse 4-way 6x9's, they are amazing, no distortion and they produce increadible bass (however they have a higher price tag than most others because eclipse likes to charge an arm and a leg for their products)

Keep the bose, unless they are blown? My system consist of 2 MTX Thunders and a 600 watt amp, they sound awsome when I turn the volume up. It depends on yuor head unit, like being able to adjust everything.

5.25" go in the doors. the dash tweeters are a pain, most people just leave their stock ones in, and mount their new tweeters on the door, a-pillar or mirror post.

5.25??
6.5
6.5 Definitely, tweeters are pretty easy... If your car has the premium package, then you have a Bose system, and you need to bypass the amp, if you have leather seats, you have the premium package... dont put in new 6x9's without bypassing the amp, it will damage or ruin the new speakers
if you want better sound quality, upgrade your head unit, and if you only upgrade your head unit you dont have to bypass the amp either... a new head unit will give you better results than new 6x9's in the back, unless they're blown
I do have the premium package. is bypasing the amp easy from the factory stereo. I was hoping to keep the factory stereo since i can still use my dension ice ipod link with it. for all intents and purposes my original head unit and speakers are fine and they sound good. I was hoping to spend 50-100 for a set of rears and then the same for a set of fronts. Then later on spend some chage and change out the head unit. however everywhere i have gone the say if i change out the head unit i will have to get all new speakers and amp so that like a easy 1000 that i didnt want to spend at one time. I have heard that i dont have to replace the speakes if i get a new head unit. If i did change that out (keeping the factory speakers) I would just need to be careful about turning up the volume on the new stereo. what is the truth in all this. Also where is the amp located for the Bose system?

Bypassing the amp is easy. I did it on mine like 2 years ago when I put my hu in. There are wiring diagrams on here, just search for it. All you have to do is splice the speaker connections going into the amp, to the ones coming out.
Alright if I were you I'd replace the head unit first, it will make the biggest difference, and you most definitely dont have to bypass the Bose amp when you replace the head unit only, I'm 100% sure of that. If you want to be able to use your Ipod with it, heres an idea:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/PIE-A...QQcmdZViewItem
Although, it only connects to the headphone output of the Ipod and it wont charge it, but for Alpine head units theres another interface thing for them that goes for around $100 where you can control your Ipod with the head unit. Also, if you go that route, you can sell the other interface on ebay, from what I saw you can get a good bit for it, new ones were going for around $130. A good Alpine head unit can be found on Ebay for around $150, plus you need a dash kit and wiring harness, then a solution for the Ipod, but its your choice.
Anyway, if you want to keep the stock head unit and replace the speakers, I'll be happy to put up a wiring diagram for bypassing the Bose amp. I have Alpine type r 6x9's and I really like them, they fit in our rear deck too, and they're about $120 on ebay. Oh keep in mind since you will be powering the new speakers from the head unit, and keep powering the stock front speakers with the Bose amp, the fronts will be a lot louder.
Also bypassing the amp isn't too hard but maybe you dont want to do it twice, so another thing to consider is doing all the speakers at once - it'll also save some shipping money on ebay if you get them from the same seller. Did I mention I highly recommend ebay for this kind of stuff? haha, its way cheaper then any retail store, good luck.

I happen to have just taken out some Infinity Kappa 6x9s from my CL that I only used for like 3 months tops. Theyre still in awesome condition, and they can be all yours too...
I can take some pics if you (or anyone else for that matter) is interested. I'll let em go for like $60 bucks. Everything works perfectly, still got the original box and everything. PM me! I'm in need of money for this addiction we all have in modding our CLs! haha

i have a 97 2.2 cl, no leather :-[ but no bose either....i think. the stock system sounds like shit, but i don't think it's bose. bose would actually have better highs than this crap.
i don't think there are any external amps. can i just replace the HU??
I want to take it one step at a time, and eventually work my way up to a nice JL10W7
Alpine Type-R speakers. and a fancy shmancy Alpine HU. I want to replace the HU first, since they are cheaper online, and I could probably easily install that myself.

Most 6x9's do not fit without spacers. The thing you want to look for is mounting depth, anything beyond 2-2.5" is gonna be problematic. My 6x9's mounting depth was way over 3" and I went through 4 different types of spacers b4 I found one that worked. Mine the magnets were so big, I had to raise them up almost an inch. Here are the links to my threads, to show you some of what I went through. Was worth it in the end though.
