Rear Engine oil seal *help needed*

Well when my car is in the shop it seems like they found out where my oil leak is at. They said it was my real engine oil seal that is located inbetween the block and transmission. The part is only about $12 but the labor is going to be $350. From what I read, the engine has to be removed then the transmission to replace this part, hence why i understand why the labor cost so much.

Has anyone have this problem before? and if so how much?

What ways can i make sure this is the problem?

any other info would be great.

Here is the location on the bottom end of the engine assembly #30

I've seen this happen on the H motors too. I'm not sure of a way to be sure thats the issue, but if the shop is pinpointing it and saying THATS the issue, if the car still leaks afterwards i'd make them fix it for free since they diagnosed this as the issue.

+1, unless your experienced with pulling the engine and dropping the trans, i wouldnt try this by myself. the shop is liable if they fuck it up, but yeah 350$ sounds about right.

how can removing an engine, transmission and installation of the rear seal engine and trans back in the car be a 350 dollar job? thats how much they would charge for a hub over rotor brake job.

should atleast be 500 + ...sorry i meant 700 +

something fishy.......... plus its not easy to diagnose a rear seal leak

That's a good deal, if it's the rear main seal, you should be able to see the oil leak in the back by the engine if you are under the car

i guess it depends on what type of car. i was reading one about a truck and a car, but it could be different for our cars.

it was going to be $450+ but since he worked on my car before he said he will give me a price break.

$350 is a damn good price if you ask me. Ive been quoted $600+ to replace my rear main seal... still trying to work something out with the dealership.

yeah I might have a few other places to check for a quote I just like going to the dealer because I know most of them and they usually always take care of me. They got me my transmission for free plus a loaner car even though I was out of warranty by 2 years lol so I trust them...

Isn't that the oil pump seal? That whole assembly looks like an oil pump or is it just the crankshaft seal? $350 is awsome for such extentive work. GL

You can tell what seal it is by the direction of the leak. If it's coming from the rear main seal then you should be able to find resedue of oil right where the engine and tranny meet.

The tranny does have to be dropped to replace this.

I waited till I had tranny issues to address that problem in the past just to save money.

That's a good deal. If you have money to spare, go for it.

Dude so what did you end up doing?

My answer was for a 2.2 by the way. (check sc name) And i am sure about that. THey should not have to take any tranny down just open up the Timing belt cover. But a mechanic would be your best interest for trying to get that nut loose is a bisssh

Do you have a shop to do the suspension work? JC Auto House off Lower Azusa and Rosemead. He is legit. He's his own worker, and doesn't pay other people to do it for him. He tells you exactly what he is doing and why as well. He has a parts guy very local to him so once he diagnoses a problem, he can call in for a part (before 5pm) and get it within 5 minutes to fix it. Awesome guy to work with. It was $80 to change/replace my passenger axle... he also did my wheel hubs... forgot exactly how much, but it's fair for quality work. lmk if you need the info. Sorry to thread hijack!

My rear main seal is leaking too, but yea... drop the tranny.. expensive job.

Yeah a rear main job for $350 is a good price. If your car's a manual, most shops will recommend replacing the clutch at the same time since they have access to it after dropping the tranny. You should be able to see oil sprayed on the undercarriage from where the tranny meets the engine back if the leak is very bad.
