Rear Brake pads and rotors - I searched already

Is it me or does the search function only return results from the last two weeks?

Anyhoo, I have a similar situation to red99cl2.3 in that my dealer told me I need new rear pads and resurfacing of both rotors. They wanted to charge me about $200 so I told them I would get it done elsewhere.

I called my regular mechanic who never screws me on price, and he told me their book told them rear brakes on my 99 2.3 would require 3.5 hours of labor and a total cost of $400+ including new rotors.

I know a lot of you who participated in the recent group buy will have at least some knowledge on what this job requires. Can anyone help me out with the pricing and what needed to be done? Thanks.

with the group buy a comlete set of rotors and pads is 235, labor for installing all of it was about 300 for me, so thats 535 for new rotors and pads on wheels, so 400 seems steep for just the rear.

300 is just wayy too much money to pay unless you have a 97 since he has a 99 it shoudl cost you more than 200 to get them installed so its 235.00 plus 200.00 is 435.00 for all new BREMBO cross drilled and slotted rotors and AXXIS pads. these are both ten times better than OEM. look for the group buy sticky on the top of the page.

red99cl2.3,
I saw your group buy, but I thought it was done already. Primarily I wanted to know if there was any reason for the rear brakes to require 3.5 hours of labor. Am I reading your response correctly in that it only cost you $200 for installing front AND rear? Thanks.

xrunner, thanks for the price point.

lnsyone, thanks for the great information. It was very helpful.

group buy is still open my friend its never going to end. the rear brakes take more time than the front because i believe they ahve to turn the rotor, dont know exactly what it is. and it actually cost me 190.00 in a good place. if they wanna charge you 400.00 you might as well take a trip down to RI(only 3 hours away) and get it done for 190.00

red99cl2.3,
Thanks for your prompt responses. I'm just going to get it done at my dealer. It's about $200 all inclusive. It seemed to be twice as much as it should be so I wanted to know why. I would consider purchasing through the group buy and installing myself, but not at the risk of rear rotor issues. That is why I wanted to know exactly why the rears are more labor intensive.

lnsyone,
I'm not hating on you OR your brakes. I posted a question to which you provided a commentary on your own brakes. I agree, they look nice. However, I might trade this CL in for a new TL. So it doesn't make much sense to put Brembos on it, right?

If you are gonna spend $200 on rear brakes, why dont' you do them yourselves and upgrade them to slotted/drilled rotors.

www.irotors.com

I did mine, dustbuster4 did his and they don't take long at all. If you feel lazy, take them to your local shop and pay them about $100-150 to do it, total cost would be around $400 then.
