Ive only ever been hit for sure by Ka band, X band is definitely a joke and K band basically is too, but some of the cop cars and emergency vehicles broadcast it so its nice to know they're there.

Its not really "a radar", it's a detector. I have a bel vector 985 and no tickets yet, but i dont drive a lot of places where cops do radar. If I had to commute on the highway I would invest in a Valentine.

V1, I swear by it, anything other then the 8500 is complete and absolute junk. Mine paid for itself w/in the first month and has saved me from multiple BIG TICKETS! Don't go cheap on something like this.

v1

V1. Wouldn't own anything else. Saved my ass 100s of times.

It's actually two radars, one front, one rear, not like the others that only pick up radar from the front (even though they say 360 degree). There not.

Expensive, yes but also the resale on the V1 is great. Check Ebay and used go for over $300.00. You get your money's worth. Dont skimp on junk and consider the Valintine 1 an investment.

V1 no doubt, i am using a shitty cobra right now and it is useless. The V1 on the other hand can pick up a speed trap miles away or even just a cop with radar on a mile or more away. And tell where they are coming from.

I use the escort 8500 its awesome, the extra 100 you pat for the v1 is for the directional indicatord which are inaccurate at times on highways from teh signals bouncing off buildings, they false a bit more too i noticed.. still a great detector but i like the 8500

Escort 8500 for me. I've had it almost 3 years and the only problem I had with it was with the programming. It kept saying 'service' or something. I called them up, sent it out, they upgraded the programming, sent it back with more accessories, and extended my warranty. I love it. It also works pretty damn good. Haven't been caught yet but Texas is really flat so it can pick up a faint signal about a mile and a half away.

First mod I did for my Z was a V1. LOL. I've heard too many good stories about them to not get one. So far, NO tickets and it's saved me a few times.

Passport 8500 is what I got, d00g is right, but either the 8500 or the V1. Best money spent.

xrunner86x- different parts of the country use different types of radar. I know K Band is used lots around here, the Kustom 12 Transmits K band, and the Kustom is the highest sold radar in the nation. Departments are starting to buy Stalker Radar Guns, which can transmit K or Ka Band. Superwide Ka is the hardest radar to detect, V1 and Escort have the best superwide detection avaiable. I know the cops cars around here transmit Ka Band from the front radar, and K from the rear radar!

If the police are lazy (which they usually are) and leave the radar gun on, you will be able to pick them up a long ways away. If they are trying to catch speeders, and using instant on, you are fucked no matter what detector you have. (Note: Sometimes if you are traveling behind some people, you can detect the instant on before hand, thats why you never speed alone)

When I was looking into getting one the reviews i read said cordless (battery) = less power = less detection.

V1

You guys got me thinking, and believe it or not, after doing some checking i found out my V1 could be updated from the company. They replace the whole unit for $189.00 (basically get a brand new unit). I'll doing it while I'm away on business (Newfoundland), so I'm not without it while in driving at home.

Although biased, the Valentine 1 website describes the inaccuricies of the cordless and other radar detectors.

Its just powered by batteries...

Plus if you don't like that you can plug it in too.

I've owned the solo before...b/t it and the 8500 its night and day. Solo 2 is a totally different story from what I understand...supposed to be just as good as the 8500.

You can plug it in? Does that turn off any power saving mubojumbo?

So how is the Solo 2 diff from the 8500 then? How is it night and day? Is it better or?? I really like the display on it better, much easier to read.

Man, I wish Valentine would update the V1 with a new design (Case, ergonomics) The current display sucks. I'm sure they're working on it, but who knows when it will come out.

Yes you can plug it in...Not sure about the power saving stuff....But I would think it turns it off like the first model.

Solo 2 can go cordless...8500 cannot. They're supposed to be pretty even I think. They have forums for this kind of stuff I'm sure. I'd ask there.

I just re-read your other reply. You had the original solo...gotcha and the 8500 is better than it. I thought you meant you had the S2 and that it was night and day w/ the 8500. Nevamind...lol

Thanks for the info tho, Ima def check the S2 out. Blue backlit displays kick ass...

I bought the cheapest detectors I could find for my wife's Maxima SE and my CL. The city we live in has lots of radar traps and we've both been saved by the detectors. The CHP has been using radar guns on I-80 between Sacramento and Reno and mine always picks up the signal before I get into trouble.
