Pulleys

I see quite a few of you have aftermarket pulleys installed. I've been reluctant to because I've heard they cause overheating and battery drainage. Is anyone experiencing these problems? On the flip-side, what sort of performance increase are you getting? Finally, how difficult are they to install? Thanks.

well overheating i never heard of. the alternator pully makes less voltage at idle so if u use alot of crap during idle u can drain ur battery.ex stereo system, ac, fogs. i have no probs but then i have an I4 and we dont have the probs like accord v6s. we have diff alternators. i dotn know what kind the 3.0 has. but i do knwo the v6 cordshave some probs with their battery becuase of their alts. it seems improper install is most likey the case. i think fastvtec has pullies but i dont really know anyone else witha 3.0 who has them. plus install is more complicated then I4. our shit is easy. our stuff is all up top but i think ur power steering is hard to get to ont he 3.0.

The pulleys have NO detrimental effect on the car. In fact, I would recommend them as one of the first mods to invest in (second after cold air intake).

Take the plunge, you'll be glad you did.

I haven't seen anyone with a 3.0 and have pulleys installed. It would be interesting to see if it's possible though.

For indopinoy:
What brand pulleys do you have? Did you install them yourself or where did you get them done? TIA

aem pullies off the v6 accord..ordered online but installed at alamo autosport in arlington .. i didnt want to install myself because one of the belts ran around the engine mount, but i think clpower or someone else did it themselves. cost me 135 for pulleys n 150 to install (way too much for install, but i had no other choice at that time)

Well, I called the Acura dealer here about installing the pulleys and they said they wouldn't do it, and that having those aftermarket pulleys will void the warranty. Since I still got two more years on my warranty, I think I'll hold off. Thanks for all your input.

pulleys dont void any warrenty unless they when u have a prob they are what cuased it. ex. ur kill powersteering pump dies. no warrenty thers cuz u had a aftermarket pully on it. but if ur radiator blows up that is underwarrenty. so at most ur alternator and p/s pump will be void. thats it. and thats the law

thats becuase they dont want to be liable for anyprobs with parts they are unfamiliar with. no to mention they charge like $80 an hr. ur better off going to a local performance shop or whatever. i dont have a prob with this but the dealers who try to tell ppl that there whole warrenty is void and try to get out fixing their car pisses me off. the first dealer i had to speal with the service manager and tell that i know the laws and they are supposed to fix my shit. otherwise i want it in writing how my warrenty is void, then im calling acura and possbily the federal trade comisssion. they said i was right and fixed it. but i got that free acura inspection crap in the mail and went to a closer dealer and they gave me no probs. and when i got my car back they said GREAT JOB on the bottom of the diagnostic paper and the mechanics all came out and told me how much they liked my car. i was so surprised and i will take my ar to them from now on.

OK, I see two options:
1. AEM has kit w/ lighter and smaller PS and ALT pulleys.
2. Unorthodox has kit w/ lighter and smaller crank, but just lighter (same size) PS and ALT.

Any opinions on which to go with?

unorthodox you get the crank pully? I think that would be abitch to get off, unless your gonna have a shop do it.

Replacing the stock pulleys with lighter and different sized ones reduces the angular intertia of the pulleys, and also reduces the drag the accessories put on the engine. It will slow those accessories (alternator and power steering) down a little, but not so much as to be detramental.

Having pulleys reduces the power going to your accessories and increases your engine power. (think of it in terms of a ten speed bike) about a 1-3 hp increase.

I wouldn't change the crank pulley on an I4. Unorthodox crank pulleys do away with the harmonic dampener (the heavy rubber thing in the stock crank pulley). I4's need this because they are an inherently inbalanced design. Without the dampener, vibrations from the motor will fatigue the crankshaft. There's a rather technical article about this at Dinan's site.

If you can change the accessory pulleys, I'd do that instead.

I was under the opinion that the front and rear balancing shaft took care of the harmonic balancing. The crank pulley in mine has no rubber/weighting on it whatsoever. Just a pulley.

f0de has one on his car if you want his opinions.

this engines getting thrown in the ocean but i thought the harmonic balancer was on the shaft too.. i'm getting the h22a sleeved, je forged pistons, crower cams and rods, and blue printed and balanced.. and i'm finally parting with power steering and a/c
