Overheating

I have searched the site for advice on my overheating problem and couldnt find any info. I think my cooling fan has stopped I havent heard it lately and I live in hOOOt Texas. MY 98 CL 2.3 started smelling hot the other day and at first it was only at redlights but once I started moving it would cool back down. Now the temp redlined and spewed steam, should I start with the thermostat. I havent seen any leaks around head gasket area or radiator but who knows. Has anyone else experienced this? Help

Do you have coolant left? Should check the level, IMO.

Hmm, it spews steam?? My car temp usually goes up if I'm idling for a while due to the radiant heat from the engine but it'll go down to middle of cold to medium when on the go. Did your car just start doing this, or you just got the car?

Most likely is the thermostat, they're notorious for going bad in our cars

well i had a slow leak from my radiator hose because the clamp wasent causin enough pressure so check your clamps for the radiator hose. the thermostat is another issues. they go bad and they stop reading correctly, or you just dont have coolant lol are your fans working ?

So the temperature shouldn't ever go past half? Maybe my radiator fan has stopped running too. My temp seems to go up while idling for a while, but never to the point where it spewwed steam.

I took the thermo out and boiled it and it did open, so I dont think its that unless this is not a proper test. Have plenty of coolant, I see no visible leaks. The oil is not cloudy and also see no leaks around head gasket area. My 98 cl was just slighty overheating at red lights then it would go back to normal when moving but now it spiked to redline even on highway, I dont hear cooling fan? I will check all fuses this afternoon.

Sounds something like my car... after running for 30+minutes it will go above 50% but if i blast my heat at 90deg for like 2min it goes back to 50%... then it never rises again... atleast not for a long time.

Let me know what fixes yours Im thinking its something with the fans not kicking in.

I got the same problem, my car would overheat at idling at a drivethru or a red light. Only happened a few times, goes down when I'm driving though.

Check to make sure that there is power going to both fans on the radiator. First check the fuses because that only takes a second. If the fuses are good, then turn on the A/C and that should power up both fans. Both fans only have a 2 wire plug so 2 minutes with a test light will confirm for power to each fan. You start checking for problems at one end and work your way down to the other end. If the fan plugs don't have power then you check the fan relay. My money is on the fan motor gone bad.
