because a higher viscosity oil is better for your engine. It doesn't thin out under agressive/constant driving like 5w-30. especially since he's in Texas, no need to worry about cold starts.

Can someone knowledgeable put together a concise FAQ of pros and cons of different oil grades? 5w30, 10w30, etc.
My car has 260 km's = 160 mi's on it. Temperature rarely goes below 0C here (30F). My car spends most of its time in a heated garage, never overnight outside. What would be the best oil for me to ensure long engine life?
Also, my mechanic said engine burns a bit of oil. What should I use to top it up? Haven't checked oil levels yet since I got the car in a month

5w 30 is always the best choice in our cars. only the most extreme southern parts of the US might one benefit from 10w 30/40. putting anything thicker than 5w30 in our cars just uses more gas. with the advances in engine oil or the use of a synthetic, 5w30 gives the best protection, fuel economy and performance. I would highly recommend a full synthetic 5w30 like Amsoil or Mobil1 Extended Performance.
and as far as oil consumption.. I had a 93 accord that used some oil. I tried going thicker and it really didn't do much to help it. the only real solution is a rebuild or start looking for an oil leak.

Does it matter what oil the car has been used with since "birth"? I've got the records since day 1. Should I even attemp to switch at this point, or should I figure out what the previous owner used and keep using it?

Then it's burning it, could be any one of valve stem seals, valve guides, or rings. I found out mine smokes on startup for about 30 seconds but couldn't see it until it got below zero. Compression test will help to diagnose this or watching for puffs of smoke at various times during driving. Synthetic will make it burn more because it cleans out the gummy buildup that might be preventing your oil from getting past the seals
There is no leak (it's been inspected before purchase by a kickass mechanic), and it's nowhere near bad enough for a rebuild.
