Noise on accerlaration?

Well, I just picked up my 98 2.3 CL a few days ago. Anyway, I've started to hear a high pitched almost whiney sound. Thing is I only hear it when I barly push the gas. Like at cruising speeds. Not when I'm on the gas really hard. Kind of like in the middle. It's definitely coming from under the hood. Any idea what might be causing it?

Thnaks.

Is it loud or quiet? My intake makes that noise now. At least I never noticed it until I installed my intake.

We have a Subaru outback '06 and it makes that noise also when you barely press on the gas. (and it doesn't have a modified intake)

It's not too loud. It's very high pitched though. Like you can only notice it with the a/c and radio off when driving. But yeah, my car is bone stock. I'm not sure what it is though. It seems to be running fine.

Do you have a K&N air filter in it? When I installed mine, I immediately noticed a high pitch whine on acceleration. Nice sound though.

I had the same problem look for a thread started by me maybe two months ago. Turned out to be a combo of water pump and idler pulley, this happened a few hundred miles after my timing belt service. fixed now though. I wouldn't suspect its your alt noise if you can hear it when the radio is off.

You will get that noise if your timing belt was just changed. Kind of sounds like a supercharger. Its just the belt breaking in.

I've never heard of "breaking in a belt", i could be wrong though. My bet, and only because of that thread I posted on my experiences with the same problem, is its a bearing either in the water pump or idler pulley, or even the bearing on the alt pulley. He needs to poke under the hood and locate the sound. (Remove the rubber grommet from the timing belt cover and see if the noise gets louder.

Thanks for the replies. Like I said, I only hear the noise when I have the gas pedal depressed about 20%. The sound is actually pretty dull but high pitched. My friend didn't even notice it until I rolled down the windows. We'll see.

Let me go pop the hood...

I actually just experienced this today on my way home for work. They way I'd describe the noise I heard was as if a a big semi was hitting the brakes and they were squealing. I have all the same symptoms listed above. I was basically stock at the time with just cat back exhaust, but I installed my AEM V2 when I got home so hopefully I'll never hear it again.

that's what I was thinking but when I was installing my V2 and I took off my vacuum lines they were on really good. So I don't think that's it.

Ever since the delership changed my idle control valve, it has been making a sound, not as loud, like a blowoff valve.

I read from a previous topic similar to this one and they say it was the ac bearing.

at the time I heard the squaling I did have the temp set at 60 and the fan at 3/4 which is abnormal for me so maybe that is what caused it.

It is definitley the A/C bearing. I had the same prob. The dealer replaced the bearing when they changed my timing belt. The labour is gonna cost you $$$ but the part is about $70.00 cdn.

How do you know its the AC, could just as easily be alt, power stearing, idler, autotensner, or ac pulley. My hum (as posted in link above) was the waterpump after being replaced. He really needs to tell us a more exact location of the noise. Poke under the hood and play with the throttle to simulate acceleration and pinpoint the noise.
