new sub box! and useful info... read!

i built the sub box for my type r's today. i thought you guys might also like to see how world class stereo and trunk installs are built using fiberglass as well so here is some useful pics for you guys.

first, the box was made and the rings were cut out to raise the subs out.

2 rings were used per sub and then 2 cotton sheets were wrapped and stapled over the entire front of the box.

then everything was fiberglassed.

the glass was rough sanded and bondo filled on the small imperfections (no pic). after everything was blocked down with 60 grit to get the shape of the entire front symmetrical, a guide coat was used. you simply spray 1 light coat of a noticeable color over everything. then you wet sand the guide coat, and when there is no blue paint left anywhere you have sanded out all your low spots.

a couple coats of primer and then spot putty to fill any pin holes that are commonly left after using bondo.

in primer, ready for paint.

if you are coming to the NEPA show you will see the finsihed product.

Looks great! Very innovative!

Does the box fit snuggly between the wheel wells, or did you leave any room? Just curious (I may redo my sub box; and I'm gathering ideas).

about 6 layers of resin, which is kinda thick, but you end up sanding off a layer or 2 to smooth it out. the trick is in the first layer. i used 2 sheets on the wrap. the thicker the wrap, the stronger it is.

remember, adding extra layers of resin isnt the same as adding layers of cloth and resin. the cloth and resin combo is where the strength is.

and even though this was a simple job, all fiberglass installs are done on the same basis. you wrap, wrap, wrap. sometimes you wrap around rings, others your wrap around a frame you built in your trunk or amp rack, or you can wrap around anything basically. its pretty easy. if there is enough interest i will post pics with instructions on a basic glass job. just let me know.

oh, and one more thing, body kits are done the same way, except they are more difficult because you are wrapping in so many directions.
