Sorry if I'm hijacking this thread, but it is sort of related. What causes that ricey tone? I understand a 4 cyl CL is going to sound completely different than a V8 Camaro, but why do (import) V6s have the tendency to sound ricey versus a V6 domestic? My sister have a V6 Mustang and the exhaust on it sounded awesome.

Import exhausts are tuned differently, a V6 3.0 will usually have different piping and design than that of a CL, I know that with at least the camaros, TA's, and Montes

I heard somewhere that resonators keep the rice sound down... Any truth in this?

Is it possible then to buy an exhaust meant for, say a Chevy, and use custom piping to fit on the 3.0 CL?

Anything is possible, but you would probably lose power. Exhausts on newer cars are more tuned than on older ones. You would be losing backpressure, and backpressure is as important as anything else. Highly modified motors will benefit from a bigger exhaust, but a mostly stock car will most likely lose power.

On a side note, you can go to the flowmaster site and actually listen to the exhaust notes each muffler produces. It isnt vehicle specific, but it can tell you if it is close to the tone you are looking for.

you'll def loose back pressure, not to mention, with their sideways mufflers, I don't think you could mount them up with the gas tank being where it is.

I did the same thing, its too noisy at low RPM'S and I would rather just hear my intake when I punch it. With the exhaust it was all the time.

after readong 20 threads or so about this topic, I'm actually leaning towards keeping my stock exhaust. Now just want a sub and drop her. Got a feeling I'll be eating rice if I mod the exhaust first

A quick, easy and cheap solution:

Go to a muffler shop and have them remove the resonator and
replace it with ordinary piping. Cost is $35 to $50.

The J30a sounds good this way.
I did this on my 98 EX V6 Accord, and the sound was phenomenal!
No rasp, no excessive bass or booming. Just a crisp revving sound,
that increased with rpms.
The Accord had a resonator and a midmuffler, I removed both.
I think the Cl has only one resonator... get rid of it - you won't be disappointed.

The sound was not intrusive at all. The car sounded stock, but tuned. (Damn close to the Comptech axle-back in sound quality and tone) In fact, had there been a sport model Accord, this is how it should have sounded.

This mod is worth at least a consideration.

Here's a clip that's sounds almost just like it.

I tried removing the resonator and it wasnt the sound i was looking for. So I got greddy evoII catback exhaust and i just dont like the way it looks on my car. I was looking into these because I think if i put some nice tips on them that arent too big that they will look nice on my car and still sound nice since I already have the larger piping.

I'm not completely off on changing the muffler out, just have to get my priorities straight, just got married, so I've got to watch how much money I spend at once. I solidly want that 14618 muffler and it's just a bit too much money right now. So I chose the subs instead, it was easier to convince her of theyre worth, since she does at least think the car is the shit.

ok so i think i know what im going to do. I talked to my neighbor and he said said that welding a muffler on would cost about 70$, then he told me that i could do it myself with a hack saw and muffler clamps. so what i think im gonna do is get the http://www.flowmastermufflers.com/pr...oducts_id=4110

i like the deep sound and it cheaper than the magnaflow, but my question is what size do i order if im doin muffler clamps 2.25 or 2.5?
