new CL owner!
i just bought a black '98 2.3CL 5speed w/ 48k miles... i think i got a really good deal, $12,200 after tax and 4 year warrenty. i have a few questions... first, i can see that no one sells intakes specfically for the first gen. CL... so is everyone buying intakes that were made for the accord? if so... what year accord, and for the money, whats the best cold air intake? (also, im not really handy with the wrench, is it an easy install?) and i also have a few questions reguarding the engine... i noticed that around 1,900rpm to 2,400rpm... the engine seems to be alittle rough (on the upshift and downshift) and i was wondering if that was normal its kinda minor, but sometimes bugs me (my dad didn't even notice it) but im pretty use to the car now and its definitely there. and i also noticed a slight noice at around 3,200rpm... is it the vtech doin that or did i buy a car w/ some problems?!?! final question... for now!!.... engine seems to idle at about 1,700rpm (when warmed up) is that normal? it seems kinda low because i noticed that the engine shows the slighest bit of vibration when in idle? ne help would be great!! my last car was a 99 neon r/t. good little car, might be slighty quicker than my CL, but dodge - acura.... need i say more?!?!
i got a 97 2.2 manual trans about a month ago. As far as the intake ? goes i dont know what the best intake for the first gen is and the application for it is the 94-97 four cylinder accord. I have a matrix gr motorsports. intake and it works just fine. It is really easy to install an intake. It pretty much bolts right up. When my car starts up when its cold it idles at about 1500 rpms then drops to about 500 when it is in optimium operating range (warmed up). There is a lot of controversy of when vtec actually kicks in because the single cam engines dont give as much of a kick as the dual cam engines do (or so i've heard) most people say it kicks in around 3200 to 3500 (what most have said) so i'll leave that part up to them. What exactly do you mean when the engine is a little rough, please explain in more detail, because what you said was a bit unclear. I hope i've helped you out.
thanks for the help... about the engine being rough- around 1,900 to about 2,400 rpm it isn't smooth... feels like a slight vibration and it is constant in that 500rpm band i mentioned. it does it when accelerating and decelerating. feels as if the engine is struggling. but like i said.. it isn't real noticeable, and my dad drove the car and he didn't hear or feel it, but i did as he was driving... so i don't really know, maybe it's just me! as far as the intake... the accord got the 2.3 liter in '98 right? so then i should just get an intake that was made for the 98 4cyl. accord?! thanks
My engine was struggling/shaky a little bit when I accelerated and decelerated it also had a weird vibration around 2,500 rpms. I put on a new rubber exhaust o-ring mount that holds up your exhaust right near the hangers near your flex pipe. This got rid of the vibration at 2,500rpms. I took it to the dealer and they said that I needed a new motor mount so I had them replace my front engine mount, and that took care of the shaky accel/decel problem. Hope that helps.

there has been talks about the car shaking in second at about 2k rpms. Mine does the same thing, so i just step on the gas

Welcome. I just bought my 97 2.2CL 5spd last friday (2/28/03). I love the car, but you might want to get your idle checked out. 1700 warmed up seems way too high. And I also notice the vibration while accelerating..but didn't really notice it during decel.. Oh well, goodluck and let us know how things turn out.

yeah, i dont really notice the 'rough sound' you mentioned but maybe someone else might know whats going on otherwise. On the ? about the intake there is a 2.2 and a 2.3 that were in the accords. Your looking for the 2.3 so i believe that the 98-2002 four cylinder accord intakes will fit. I've heard a lot of people more so lean towards the aem CIA (cold air intake) for the best results. You might want to talk to someone who has one for the full run-down
As for a Intake. The best in my mind is the CAI. It gives you more torque in the mid-range, where you spend most of your driving time. and nice HP thru the whole RPM range. The Short(or Hot air intake) works the best at the VERY TOP of the rpm range and looses power down low.
I got a AEM CAI in my 97 Lude and LOVE IT! Great sound and nice power adder.

thanks for the help... i think im gonna go with an AEM CAI... i made a type-o earlier.... my car idles at about 1,500-1,700 when its freezing outside... which seems normal... but when its warm it drops to about 600-700 rpm, which i thought maybe alittle low cause its starts to slightly vibrate
