Mixing Paint?
Mixing Paint?
Hey guys, I have some paint left over from when I got my spoiler painted and I want to use it to paint my grille.
I bought an airbrush kit tonight that i can use to get a nice finish.
My only question is, how do I mix the paint? Do I need to thin it at all or can I just spray it on?
Also how many coats should I put on and how many layers of clearcoat? Thanks!

Did you paint the spoiler yourself?? I have no idea how to mix the paint, just wanted to say that i'm, glad you're only trying this on your grill if it's your first time.
Also I saw your pics and think your grill looked pretty sick already, but black would look good too. Are you doing the top and bottom grill? Or just the Top?

make sure you strain paint thru cheesecloth after mixing & thinning... as usual, surface prep is 90% of a great paint job. Sand, use tackrag, prime and spray paint. Several thin coats are better than a heavy one... post pics of results please!
Do you know what type of paint it is? Lacquer, Enamel, Urethane??? Anyhow, the average mixing ratio is usuall 3 or 4 to 1. Meaning 3 or 4 parts paint to one part reducer. But the only way to tell is through trial and error if you don't have the exact specs. Just mix different samples and try spraying it, whichever gives better results and is easier to spray then that is your ratio.
Good luck. Painting is actually easy once you try to do it yourself!!! Waiting till the rain goes away so I can begin painting my custom job. White with a frost blue pearl. Should come out good. Can't wait to see how it turns out!!!!

Wow that's expensive stuff. It's an acrylic Urethane paint and you would have to purchase a PPG reducer. One more question before giving the mixing ratio fully. Is it a Deltron DBU or a Deltron DBC paint?
For the deltron DBC...a DT reducer is to be bought and used and mixed in a 1:1 ratio. Meaning if it's a quart of paint you need, you would add 1 quart of the reducer as well.
For the Deltron DBU...you would have to use a DRR Reactive Reducer in a ratio of 1 part paint to 1.5 parts of the DRR Reactive Reducer.
You would have to find an auto body supply store to purchase these reducers unless you head back to the shop that gave you the paint and ask to buy the reducer from them.
Reducer is in this case a paint thinner. It would allow you to spray the paint alot easier, otherwise it would be too thick to shoot a coat.
Hope the above info helps you. Any other ???? don't hesitate to ask. I'm willing to share my experiences.
Good Luck!!!
Oh btw you should do one medium coat of color (50% overlap pattern) and two coats of clear, only because the grill is a rather small item. Too much paint will make it look plasticky and very thick.

Hey man, not much skill required. Patience...just a little. I'm sure you have that. By the way it is fun and you would be proud of being a do it yourselfer!!!! Well, just don't let the shop overcharge you.
Either way, can't wait to see how it turns out!!!
