LONG header install

You guys are gonna think I'm crazy, but it took me and a friend 7 hours to install my new headers. I found a set of OBX stainless steal headers on ebay for $118.00 and I couldn't resist.

It was cold and windy outside....and to be honest, the install was a pain in the butt. It was hard to reach some of the bolts and it was also pretty hard to put some of the bolts back in. I had to attatch and re-attatch the two pieces of the headers like three times cuz we couldn't get everything to match up for some reason. But after 7 LONG, cold hours....we got them to fit perfectly....and am pretty sure there are no leaks.

As for the performance gain....I can definately hear the difference and my high end definately feels a bit more peppy. I didn't get to drive it around too much tonight...since I'm pretty beat from working on it. Hopefully I'll get to enjoy it more tomorrow. So far....it was worth every penny. I'm also glad that I got to do the install rather than paying some shop to do it. Definately more rewarding....even though it was such a pain.

I can post pics....but i'm sure all of you know how headers look....i think SS headers look a LOT nicer than the CC ones....even though most people will never see them.

Its a lot easier to remove the cat as well as ur down there to give u some room with the headers. Install the header pipes first than the down pipe. Then bolt the cat on and then A pipe of the exhaust. It was simple for me once i got the stock headers off.

Good work BTW. Keep us updated on the performance gains. What did u do with the o2 sensor port at the top? Does it come with a plug? looks like they have a o2 port from what i see from all the pics on ebay.

Yea man....it definately shouldn't have taken that long!! I had a lot of problems with some of the bolts under the car. Some of the bolts were such a pain....maybe i just didn't have the right tools. Then i did the mistake of attatching the downpipe first....then the top wouldn't bolt onto my engine block. That sucked....so then I had to take it apart and do it over again.

We also had to make two separate runs to Advanced Auto Parts cuz we found out that we were missing a deep 12mm and 14mm socket....as well as a LONG extension. We also thought some PD blaster would definately help.

That freakin O2 sensor itself took about an hour to get off. That was on there pretty tight. We finally gave up and took it to Advanced Auto Parts....and they had a tool that took it right off.

So I guess you could say we ran into a lot of "little" setbacks....and we also ran outta daylight, so we were pretty much out in my parking lot with nothing but a mag light and a decently bright parking lot lamp right above us. So that made things a lil more tricky.

Started things up at 2:30pm and thought that we'd definately be done before dinner......dinner ended up being at 10pm.

That's the exact same one from the same guy. He shipped it FAST! I wasn't expecting it till mid-next week, but it was sitting on my doorstep yesterday morning! It should fit perfectly. Hopefully the install will go a lot smoother for you!

Sure man....

here's a BRIEF how-to.

1. Unbolted and took off the heat shield for the stock headers.
2. Loosed the 12mm bolts that attatch the headers to the engine block.

3. The stock header is two pieces, so I unbolted the three 14mm bolts that attatched the top piece with the bottom piece.

4. Got under the car and took off the two spring bolts that attatch the downpipe to the cat.

5. Unbolted the other two spring bolts before the O2 Sensor.

6. Unbolted the metal plate that acts as a hanger for the headers.

7. Unplugged the 02 sensor. The O2 sensor is attatched to a 6 inch portion of the down pipe. It sits pretty between the cat and the header downpipe. You can take the whole piece off separately to unscrew the O2 sensor.

8. After everything is unbolted, take off the stock header.

9. When putting the new header in put the top piece in the engine bay and before mounting it on the engine block, bolt bottom piece to it from under the car.

10. Then after the two pieces are together, then mount the header onto the engine block with the 12mm bolts, and then continue attatching the bottom portion back to the cat.

11. Plug the O2 sensor into the port.

12. After everythings bolted back into place. Make sure you wipe down the upper portion of your headers with some dishwashing liquid or rubbing alcohol so that you don't have permant finger prints burned on your headers. Well that's only if you get Stainless Steel Headers.

13. Then start her up and check for exhaust leaks....

Okay that was not in a nutshell...that was long. I'm done.
