How's our cars at autocrossing?
My friends when 2 sundays in a row. i unfortunately had to work. i just saw the video one of my friend's took and it looks like fun. but we're planning to go again next month. how do our cars fair? do you keep it in 1st all the way or shift to 2nd? coz. its hard to shift back to first sometimes. i know our cars have a terrible turning radius so will this affect the results? is it all about the driver or does a faster car get faster results? any tips?

insurance will cover you, assuming you have collision coverage if you are not on a race track and only in a parking lot
how well it will do is another question, i went to about 12 events this year. I raced in STS, lots of competition in this class.
here are the results from the last race. The first run i beat every single car except a westfield. but after that the vettes started to put the power down.

sts is street tire touring. a stock 2.x competes in H stock which is the lowest class. STS is for suspension and light engine upgrades on street tires. started in april on a set of kumho 712's that had about 8 or 10k miles on them, right now i cant drive in the rain. I probably have another 8 autocross days left on them if it never rained here.

i forgot to answer the second half of your question jamolie
autoxing is 90% driver, 10% car. The best way to get better is with lots of practice. the turning radius has only hurt me once or twice, rarely do i get to full lock. The courses are designed to give handling and power their own advantage on different parts of the course. On most courses once you get it to second you leave it(5speed). Faster cars do not always get the fastest times, depending on the course the fastest car may be a CRX or a Z06.
The down falls to the CL are
1. Weight 3000+ pounds is a lot to drag around
2. No LSD

I was going to try it this last weekend, but I didn't get my suspension installed in time. A guy I work with does it all the time, and he races a Miata and a F-500 car. I think I'm going to enter next year, because they are finished here for this year. I may have him drive my car the first time, just so that he can give me tips on driving the course. They also set ours up in a huge old runway at an old airport, so there's just a lot of flat concrete.

Check with your insurance agent to see how it would be covered. Auto-X can be considered driver improvement or a "learning session", compared to say an open track day.

Is your car an auto Chris? I'm sorta worried about frying mine, but this looks really fun (for lack of a better word) to me. I think I would really enjoy it. What kind of speeds were you normally putting down? I could get into second and leave it there but that'll hurt if I have to drop below 25mph or so. What about tire wear and the cost of entering?
Hey Meryvn, where's it gonna be at? I'm game I guess. I at least wanna come watch. I just tried to find out some info online w/ no luck - but I did see a post on another forum about the local SCCA doing an autocross type thing every month over behind the car dealers @ 153.

Ok, here we go. This one on Dec. 7 is by the local SCCA. It's at the Auto Auction. The SCCA does all kinds of cools stuff around here. Rally, etc.

umm, well i have an auto 3.0, first for most second for a little bit, wait until about 15-19 miles per hour to down shift, if you put it in first too early it just wont downshift......Tires, if your right foot is heavy with our open front end, tires will be shredded. Ummm i think the tranny will hold up just fine for a few runs.....i recommend making sure you are up to date on your oil changes make sure there is oil in the engine, and maybe even tranny flush before going. Its a hell of a lot of fun....my region is only 20 bucks 15 for non members of the scca......good luck and post pics if you go.

I've never auto-xed, but I know some guys who do. It's supposed to be a lot of fun, but it can get expensive. The SCCA has some good stuff online for first timers at this link:

Cool link Sac CL. It looks like a ton of fun, I'm just worried about tires as I really don't want to spend $700+ on a new set when I ruin my current ones (80% tread left).

yeah I like pic one the best... sounds fun I would do it if I had money for new tires. Can it really count for driver improvement course? or are you just kidding.
