Finally got some new mod coming for my CL....

Picked up some 9006 replacements, which are NOT HID kits.

I don't want to do a retro-fit, and wanted something that was cheaper and more reliable.

I'm sure some have heard of HIR (Halogen Infrared Reflecting bulbs).

I know there hasn't been alot of info on AZ regarding these type of bulbs, so for those curious enough to ask, here is more info/background on HIR, please check out this site

Requires a minor mod to one of tabs (trim down) in order for bulbs to fit into factory headlight mounts!

55W bulbs with increased light output. (Performs @ 75-80% output of HID kits!)

Picked them up directly from local John Deere dealer, P/N#AH211917 for $35CAD each bulb.

Apparently these bulbs used to sell for only $16.50, but those f*kkers at J.D. got smart and now jacked up the price on them!!

If I have time, I will post up a DIY mod for them in the near future.

I wonder if they're installed or not, those wide bulbs seem like they won't fit in the reflector housing without modifying the bulb shields in the headlight

And these are brighter? Huh well it's diff ,but ill stay with my hid's. Would like to see some comparison pics though

the bulbs are wider than stock, however it will fit through the opening i imagine.

i just pulled out my trusty cordless dremel and shaved down the long tabs on both bulbs...

too bad its broad daylight out right now, so i won't be able to take any pix of the headlights in action (modding at work is fun)

i'll run out to the car and try installing them now...

HIR's arent as bright as hids, but close.
the best thing about HIR's are the cut off, they have amazing sharp cutoff lines.

Another advantage to the HIR, is the fact that the cops can't pull u over and say u got mods to the headlights since the output is true white (no bluish tint).

Plus you won't have scattered beams of light going all over the place like you would with an aftermarket HID kit -- so no glare to oncoming drivers.

Dodge Vipers use HIR, and several other high-end European brands too.

Google around the Net to find other forums who's members use HIR.

HIR's do look worth it.

Now I just need something to replace the lame looking DRL's in my 2004 TSX

Just tried to install them, but realized I need to trim down the tab some more.

Not only do you need to trim the tab lengthwise, but also widthwise too.

Tabs just trimmed widthwise....and now it fits!

Well with many cars with hid's factory these days they really cant say if it's factory or not. And many cars have the purple look stock. Most cops around here are clueless, you throw some big auto terms at them and they get that jelly doughnut look in their eyes. I remember i went sliding through a intersection one night(back in my moron teen years, got pulled told the cop my proportioning valve had malfunctioned and no problems we're to be had lol. Ahh it was a good story to be told later on.

^i dunno what factory cars your thinking of. But all of the factory hid's i have seen and read about have been around 4300K plus or minus about 200k.
at 4300k those would produce white light, with possibly a small hint of blue.
The only time you may see other colors is if you are looking at them right at the cutoff line, as they usually tend to be a blue or other color at that exact line.
Or if the bulbs are wearing out due to age. then they will become less efficient and run at hotter temps, so you'd see them go to blue, purple, and eventually a reddish pink before completely failing.

this also in response to the OP's comment about how the HIR's are not blue, well if you buy 4300k hid's, then they wouldn't be blue either, almost the same as factory, just a little whiter

Took some quick photos, will take more another day...too tired.

Without further ado:

Daylight right after installing the HIR (can't really see them on...)

Finally its dark out, headed out to Walmart to pick up Bolt in Blu-ray (but sold out when I got there....)

NOTE: I need to realign/adjust my headlights, it appears one side is a bit mis-aimed.

I definitely do notice an improvement in the usable light output, especially while driving in the country with little to no lights.

The lights appear white (OEM) without any hint of blue, so this will not attract the donut eaters

Hope this is another option for those who want brighter light output, without the ricer look at a reasonable price!

I'll try to find some time soon to do a before/after comparison at night.

LOL not pointing fingers @ anyone in particular, however I vowed not to just stick in an HID kit and be like others who blind me with bright scattered lights either oncoming, or while driving behind me....

And I actually hate any lights that put out anything higher than 4300K

yeah i was just making sure you're not generalizing all hid's.
i have a set in my car that's 4300k and i really like them, still need to aim the headlights to get the most out of them though.
But i haven't had any many problems that i can see with glare or anybody ever being blinded by my lights. And they are a great improvement over the stock halogens. makes the whole car safer to drive at night.
and as i've said before in threads like these, you cannot always judge by how many driver's "flash" you or anything like that either to judge if your lights have too much glare. I've never been flashed yet with the hid's, but on my last car which had factory xenon projectors i got flashed a few times for no reason (headlights were aimed perfectly fine, sharp cutoff line).
and i kinda agree with you, i don't like many of the temps over 4300, i do like the blue look, but i don't know if i could live with it everyday, plus dimished light output of them etc..

Drivers side should be miss aimed from factory should be a little down and to the left as to not blind on comers so dont let that fool you into trying to fix it

Cool, always nice to see something different. I'm curious to see how long they last in comparison to regular halogens though.

I've read up on several people having great success using them, for over 2 years on the same bulbs!

Imagine better light output (75-80% of HID), comparable cost to the silverstar and very minor mod to fit into factory light housing = BIG WIN

well i believe i adjusted the headlight mis-aim problem (went to a darkened car wash bay and used the built-in level adjustment screws)

took it for a drive and me and the missus noticed the HIR definitely lit up the roads much better than when using the stock 9006 and the LiTech/Silverstars!

i'll try to find the time to do a before (with stock bulbs), then another with the silverstars, and lastly one with the HIR and you can all judge for yourselves if the HIR are a great alt to the HID and/or retro kits

So basically the only custom work you need is to trim the tabs down to where they match the stock tabs...

I can see a lot of people going for HIRs after reading this thread.

I'll definitely consider this down the road when my silvania ultra brights burn out (if I still have the car)
