high flow cat help

Just bought a Focuz racing cat for my 97 2.2 CL. It doesn't have the 2nd O2 sensor port in it. Q1: If I put one in will the ecu still show a check engine light since this is a straight pipe vs the stock cat. Or, Q2: Can I somehow eliminate this sensor without affecting fuel regulationg.

So confused.

BTW, first time here so any and all help would be apprecited.

I was wondering this question my self. I know a o2 sensor is not hard to install. just drill a hole and weld the right size nut over the hole. But i dont know if it will work correctely with the free flow cat.

Thanks anyway. I'm finding that its going to be a bigger problem than I thought. So much for this bolt on.

Is it a problem with that brand or will another one do the job, like random tech.? Also did you have to use the accord application. I am getting exahust and headers soon and it only makes sense to replace the cat to a high flow. How hard is it to install and how much did you pay?

I paid $110 w/ shipping at www.impactparts.com. Yes its the 97 Accord EX application. Its the "race only" version (they also have a legal one). This may be why it doesn't have the O2 port in it.

Was under the car today checking out. Depending on breaking the bolts loose. It'll be fairly easy (~2hours). Hard part will be getting the nipple for the probe welded on and dealing with the ecu once its in (thats what I'm still trying to figure out).

Kiljaedoen,

So far I found these O2 sensor eliminators: http://www.eaton-design.com/mustang/mil/
Going to radio shack today, but wont get to try it till next week. Better than welding and cutting on a beatiful new cat just to find out I still get a check engine light. Will probably try this before I install the cat to troubleshoot it before I have the car all apart. Need to get new gaskets too. If only I didnt have to work....so much time.

I wonder if the high flow will make your exhaust louder, hence draw more attention, hence cops. Also if your state has emmisions test you probly wont pass...just a thought

Been moving between GA and IL and niether have emission tests. The volume thing bothers me as well. I dont know how much "silencing" the cat does on these cars. I like my header and cat back sound as is. If I can ever get this on I'll let you know.

Hey SOHCer, how much hp are you getting out of your mods? This is the exact set up I want to do to mine. I am getting dc exhaust soon, then dc headers and high flow cat.

dont expect too much from a high flow cat maybe 2-3 hp at most if u have full exhaust and cai. not only will u not pass emissions but u will be polluting way more for nothin. screw the 2 hp. not to mention that by removing the stock cat u will loose even more low end power just to gain 2-3 peak. (if i remeber correctly) u already lost a noticably amount of low end from a full exhuast and cai if u have one. the header should help offset that loss. if u had a turbo or sc i would understand the high flow cat. its not worth it if u ask me. then again i dont have one, but reliable sources inform me that its not worth it. put the 100 towards an igntion or pullies. i just though of something. if u are all about performance then why did u even buy a high flow cat or a full exhuast?? should have just went to a local shop and had a straight pipe made from the header back for less then $100. maybe even throw a tip on it for looks.

Thanks for the words of advice. The alterantive mods you mentioned have already be done and was looking for another "fix". The low end losses are not desirable, however, the VTEC lines aren't known for their snap of the neck at take off. Looking for the high end gains.

biggiev,

I have no idea what the wheel horsepower is. Looking for a dyno in the area for awhile. Anyone know what the stock wheel hp is for the 97 2.2, I know the flywheel hp was 140 hp. Even if I find one I wont have a baseline.

you could always just pull off the stock cat and ram it out with a pipe and put it back on. Did it to my truck. And it got HELLA LOUDER, the cat was the only thing i had in my exhaust and it kep it prety quiet untill it went bad and i holled it out.

FYI,

Just installed the MIL eliminators. Put the sensor back in the stock cat to check the ECU (and cause I ran out of daylight). I'll drive it tomorrow to check the ECU and do the cat tomorrow night. I figured the light would've come on if it didnt work or if some of the wiring was wrong. A few pics: http://www.syrupcity.net/~niedejb/o2.html

FYI,

Drove all day without any check engine light from the O2 sensor eliminator. Great news if I dont like the new cat I can put the old one back without redoing the wiring.

Waiting for the car to cool down to put the cat on. Should finish up tonight.

I know Im the only one replying to this post, but ya know....

Got the cat on. Fairly simple with the exception of getting the bolts off the old one.

Havnt drivin it yet other than off the ramps. Didnt sound noticeably different. Ill post tomorrow letting everyone know the results.

A few pics: http://www.syrupcity.net/~niedejb/o2_2.html

Let me know what ya think.

That looks really good, great job. Was it worth it or would you have taken it to a shop had you known what a bitch it would be? I think I might take it to a shop, probably would be worth the stress. Did you get quotes on how much it would cost to install somewhere? Looks good though, let us know how it performs and sounds, thanks.

I thought about having a shop do it but youre litereally asking them to take the emission control off of the vehicle. I may have gone that route if it wouldve had the o2 sensor port in it.

Sounds: MAYBE slightly louder. Definately a different tone. If you look at the pic on my site the id is more than just a pipe. Its a perforated/insulated casing. Like a resonator. I was expecting something unbearable but nothing I/or the cops cant deal with. Off the vtec no one would no any difference.

Performs: Way better throttle response (go figure this is probably the original equip from 97). Top end more open can probably up my top speed now. Rained here today. Tires wanted to break loose like never before. Dont know of an hp/ft lb increase, but for $100....I like.

It was the only stock portion left of the exhaust end. I feel better knowing the header and the cat back arent limited any longer. The stock items on the intake side: throttle body (cant find new one) and intake manifold (trying to justify the $500).

BTW, still no check engine light. That guy who posted the MIL eliminator on the web is my damn hero. Wish I had that kind of know how.

All mods are worth the hassle. Some just arent worth the $. I can afford all the hassle in the world (ask my employer).
