HID conversion
Hey, i was just wondering if you can use the stock housings if you do an HID conversion?
i always thoght you needed projectors but i saw an RL and it had HID's with normal reflector housings (at least i thought i did) and i was amazed that you didn't need projectors.
can you do that? will the stock housings deal with the heat?

heat isnt an issue... most halogen bulbs produce more radiant heat than an arc type light source.
Some cars have reflector type HID headlights (Newer RL's, TL's, CL's, Maxima, Q45....) and other companies choose to use projectors. The light output is relatively similar.
Putting HIDs in your headlights isnt a bad thing, you'll just lack the near perfect beam pattern of a true HID headlight, as your halogen reflector headlights were not designed to disperse such an intense beam, so you get "hot spots" on the road.
Like he said, best bet is to find a 9006 HID kit, then it'll be plug-and-play... and the bulbs fit in your headlights like a normal halogen bulb.

1. you pay $400+ for something you cant even get the real benefits of hid from
2. depending upon the police where you live, its etremely easy to tell a car with a kit from a real oem xenon reflector setup, so be preapred to be pulled over
3. you will prob distract other motorists
4. most kits do not position the capsule well when its rebased, and the cheaper kits dont have quallity parts usually.
FYI all oem setups use 4100K philips or osram bulbs!! not coated crap that appear to be 6000K, 8000K, etc. so again watch out for the 5.0
honestly if i was you i would just get some quality 70-80 watt bulbs and upgrade your wiring harness. the only lighting setup i see a huge diff in is oem reflector or projector vs. halogen. even 65 watt bulbs in my lows were better than some xenon kits. especially if you fall for that 8000, 10,000 crap cuz your light output will suck in the rain.

HID Conversion...
Actually, it depends where you live. Here in New York, no one gives you asecond look even if you have a camel as a hood ornament. Check where you live. 4100k is acceptable, but may get pulled for 6000 or 8000. They are not really brighter, just bluish or purplish.
I have HID, and I must say, it's worth it. Surf ebay, they have quite a few listing for alot less than $400.
Now, I you're feeling adventurous and want OEM projector style HID ala BMW or AUDI, check out this link:

I myself been mulling over converting my headlight housing with this mod.
It's alot of work, but very gratifying.

heres what it looks like on a cl (mine)
this is why i said all that, i have personally see all types of setups so im speaking from experience not opinion (there are some decetn kits, but nothing! nothing! compares to a true xenon reflector or projector setup) not to mention this costs less if u do the work yourself

another question for vxcl
how, if at possible is it, to modify a standard HID bulb, D2S (i can't remember the exact numbers for the other one) to fit in a 9006 socket.

ballasts, projectors, and bulbs would cost $300-400 tops. depends how much u can get some d2s bulbs for. i cannot supply them. i just have ballasts and projectors.
labor $150 ($50 is small parts, sealants, etc)
if u want me to supply the headlamps figure $500 for 2 brand new ones
and shipping to hawaii has got to be at least $50
i'm tryin to get my hands on some used cl headlamps so i can just sell the completed sets, but its hard.
