HELP!! I just dumped 4.5 quarts of oil

Ok, so I was changing my oil as usual, replaced the oil filter, tightened the drain screw, etc. Then I turn my ignition on and WOOSH, out comes 4.5 quarts of oil!!!

Under my car a rubber ring fell off, it looks like the ring from the oil filter. The filter is still attached though, I will take a closer look soon...right now if i go under my car it will be like taking an oil bath!!

So I guess something was wrong with my filter causing the rubber ring to get dislodged? Have anyone experienced this before??

Thanks for the help.

dunno but looks like you didn't seal the filter tight enough? because if you did the rubber gasket thing wouldn't have fallen off... to absorb the oil I saw the guyz at pep boys put some of that saw dust looking stuff like the stuff the janitors in elementary school used to use to clean up puke...

Yeah, the ring fell off the filter. I guess I didn't tighten it enough I guess there was some oil on my hands so I couldn't get it too tight, next time I will use the wrench for removal AND replacement. Well, off to auto zone again

Becareful not to tighten your new filter too much!

You should only need to hand tighten the filter. I NEVER use a filter wrench to tighen it. Only to remove it.

Sorry to hear about the mess!

Don't forget to lube the ring on the oil filter with oil before you put the next one on. If you dont lube the ring the oil will leak out. Remember hand tighten is tight enough.

My thoughts exactly. This is probably why you had a problem the first time, as this was one of the steps you didn't mention while changing your oil.

Good luck, and that stuff used to soak up oil and get oil stains out of your driveway is called Oil Soak. It can be bought under the name of Dri-Sweep or if you are really into some funny shit, go and buy a bag of Kitty Litter. Yes, Kitty Litter, this is what that stuff is anyways, the military buys this stuff by the tub full for their motor pools. Get some kitty litter, sprinkle it on the wet oil and let it dry up, then sweep the dry oil and kitty litter away. Place some more kitty litter on the dried up oil spot then grind it with your shoes into powder. It actually scrapes the oil from the cement and into the powder - which you just sweep away into the trash. This was once known as the 'Dri-Sweep Shuffle" and it does work.

do you think that the rubber seal could have fallen off before you installed the new filter and you didnt notice?? I dont think that it would "fall off" after install because even if the filter isnt tight the rubber is still stuck between your car and the filter element. The rubber would either have to be broken or stretched over the length of the filter in order for it to come off after install.

just my 2 cents.

do not use a filter wrench to put the filter on only use it to take it off. the filter only needs to be hand tight

that happened to me once also and I couldnt figure it out. But when I took my oil filter off to see why it spit out all that oil, I noticed that the rubber ring from the previous oil filter was still attached. I took off the old ring, threw my oil filter back on and it was fine.

Yep i agree

And you should always check the old filter to make sure the old 0-ring is not stuck to the engine block.

Im sure putting a oil filter on with 2 o-rings would cause a leak

and if you can not take the filter off when it is time, screw a filter wrench, just stab the filter with a screwdriver and turn it like that =)
