on my drive home tonight for no paticular reason my check engine light came on ? all of my gauges and other lights are off. the oil is good and the temp gauge is good.. what else could it be??
my guess is that it is electrical?

when i was in huntington beach my alternator blew, the lights all dimmed and stuff n the cd player turned off.. dont remember a check engine.. i stopped the car and it wouldnt turn back on though...

 

take it to a CKS location.. they will do an AUTOXRAY test for free..

 

Yeah when my alt went all my gauges blinked out, stereo died, and tranny shifted all funky. Car wouldnt turn back on for about 10 mins and then I was able to limp it home.

 

check alt. then check fuses to make sure nothing is blown

probably the alternator dude, thats what happened to mine. The check engine light came on and then the abs then all the electrical dimmed and then shut off completly.

 

If it's a 3.0 it may be the EGR issue. Get the code read and that should tell you what it is.

 

I am going to guess that people misunderstood what you said, and that what you are trying to say is: Your check engine light came on during the day while you had your lights turned off, therefore not luminating the lights on the dashboard. Well if this is the case, and since you have over 140k (based on your signature), and since this also seems to be the most commmon problem to the CL's, my guess is going to be the EGR valve. If it has 140k and hasnt been cleaned once, odds are it just might be your best bet. You can take care of that problem with 3 bucks worth of carbuerator cleaner and reseting your ecu (disconnect negative terminal for 10 min, be sure to have stereo code ready).

If you did in fact mean that you were driving sometime during the day/night with your lights on, and all of a sudden your lights turned off on you as the check engine light came on, that I would have to agree with everyone else that it just might be your alternator.

 

u cannot clean out ur egr ports with carb cleaner. the port that is clogged is the one off the intake plenum, which u cannot get to with out removing it.

oh yea i think its the alternator too.

 

my car did that, and then it did it again and again and agian. O2 sensor was crapping on me, along with my cat converter.

 

 

True true....but we are talking about the same thing correct? You mean the lil black thing that is only connected with 2 bolts on the #1 cylinder? I always remove that and clean the hoses as well as the gasket.

I also sometimes spray a full bottle in the throttle body while the car is on. You just gotta have someone reving the car so it doesn't die on you. I do it for no reason though, lol, I get bored sometimes. Good thing for me my manilfold is coming off this weekend. Ima have fun spraying that stuff everywhere, lol.

 

WELLLL the car seems to be fine now ??? no I dont think that it was the alternator ? i was driving in tha day and i rolled up to a stop sign and the check engine light came on and if i turned the car off / on it would not go away , but the next morning the light was gone! not sure what it was that made the light turn on but thanks for all of the possiblitys i will def take a look at cleaning the o2 sensor and the egr ports, as i am sure that they are in need of some attention..
