To Flush or not to Flush, That is the Question!

I am going to do the recommended 105,000 mile tune up that Acura recommends in the users manual. After speaking with the dealer they informed me that they include replacing the timming belt, water pump flush the engine and the tranny.

In these forums I remember reading somewhere that the CL'S trannys dont last to long after the flushes.

Any truth to this rummor.

Is there anything I should avoid? They seem pretty thorough, they say they Guarantee their work for 1 year or 12,000 miles. However, I did not get into what they guarantee nor what Im responsible for. It will cost me about 670.00 at the dealer.

I did put a transmission cooler in on Tuesday. The hardest part was removing the battery tray I actually sheared a bolt, and Getting that new hose on all the way up the metal tube.

Flushing is not bad, if anything it removes the metal filings from your fluid

Here's the story behind the flushing myth. It's true if it's NEVER been done before. Sometimes, when a car has so many miles, that the actual metal shaving floating around in the tranny is in fact actually holding the clutch packs together when in gear. So, if you decide to do a tranny flush for the first time with soo many miles, it can in fact do more harm than good. But if you've been doing them on a regular basis (every 30k), then there shouldn't be a problem with it. And yes, different tranny fluids will act differently from one another, and you will be able to feel a difference between cheap fluids and the good like, Red Line.

I flushed my 3.0 at around 85,000 miles. Tranny still kicking ass after nearly 3 years. And even flushed using Amsoil ATF. I was being brave that day.

I was pretty confident doing it since my fluid was in decent condition, not black/brown and burning smelling.

I just did a drain/fill and there were tons of shavings in my tranny, just watch out for that. My tranny went about 2 years later

When I added the transmission cooler what little tranny fluid came out was red is that a good sign?

Im the second owner and purchased it with 96000 miles, So Im not sure about how often they went in for maintenance.
I know that at 45,000 they did the required maintenance because it was logged in one of the manual that came with the car.

Im still on the fence on this one.

if you don't know what you are doing then drain and fill is the best way. if want a flush, then i would get a professional to do it.

I get what is called a fluid exchange on my transmission evry 30k or so. I dont know if thats exactly what you guys mean when you say "flush" but an exchange is the best way or so i've been told by my mechanic friend. It requires an expensive machine so only dealers and high end shops usually perform it. It just hooks up to the tranny and takes out the old and puts in the new, mine tooke almost 12 quarts, way more fluid then just a drain and fill. Had it done to my girls 3.0cl with 100k and its never shifted better. We'll just have to wait and see how long it lasts. Oh yeah, and only use HONDA ATF, never use anything else, why they require it is beyond me but trust me, I know from experience.

Yea, It really is an easy job to do and will save you some major cash. Only thing you need to do is goto a Honda or Acura dealer and pick up some ATFz1. Its $6.90/qt
