the final truth on the intake hummmmm

Ok so I read the noob guide, and I searched for intake noise. Whats the real truth on the intake humm, I had an AEM and it was LOUD, I switched to a weapon r and its a little better. Can I add an ice box and that will make it go away? Or do I have to figure out a way to go cold air? If so, why does a cold air nut humm???

If you use an air box, the hum will be significantly reduced...

The hum is just the resonating sound of the air being sucked into the intake and seeping (sp?) thru the metal piping of the intake... if you removed the resonator then the hum will be more pronounced...

Some intakes just cause a humming sound. Honestly, if it bugs you that much I would just take it off. On a good day it probably gives you 3 hp.

Some 3.0 guys say there is a hum on their intakes. I mean its a tube with air rushing through it, so its going to make some sort of noise.

I like the way my cars intake sounds, just kind of a wooshing noise, not a hum though.

It's the reverberation of noise from the metal tube vibrating, stuffing towels and such in the air box if you still have it, otherwise, some say taking the air box out reduces it as well

Intake noise

Mine is loud as hell. I just installed it three days ago, and haven't had it long enough to know if its going to bug me or not. If your intake is to loud you could put some dynamat type stuff on it so it won't vibrate.

For short rams it just does that because of the resonance which can be changed directly by changing the piping length.

Try adding a silicone coupler thats will put the filter further out usually that will drastically reduce the humming sound, at least it did for me.

On the J30A1 when I hooked up the ram air to the modified stock intake I had a slight hum as well.

For example I bet if you disconnected the vacuum lines from the intake it would most likely stop humming entirely if not almost all of it, not that im telling you to do this and leave it but just to demonstrate a point.

Apparently everyone else thinks it someone vacuuming in the house next to them at midnight.

I alternate between the SR and CAI since. The sound definitely makes people looks twice. I had a group of suby guys jump in the WRX and follow ,e just to ask what I had done to my car because it sounded like there was no restriction at all, so of course I told them ITBs

thanks for your help guys, the humming just blew me away. I have owned a GSR as well as a b16a hatch so I know that normal intake sounds, sound like and they dont bother me. The humm is just crazy, witht the AEM on it was so loud, its about 1/2 that loud with the weapon r on, so im probablky jsut going to deal with it and save my money for a V2. Does anyone know what the humm is like on the AEM v2?

It's less, but still hums. V2's are just not worth it. Secure your ebay intake, and put a k&n filter on it, that'll help with the hum too

Yeah - The AEM intakes don't offer much of anything over the inexpensive eBay ones except fa better filter and the AEM name, but like has been said before, you can buy a better K&N filter and come out with an equivalent intake for a lot less (Besides, intakes don't really give our cars much more power at all - I think for the most part they're just for looks and sound.)

Why get an intake if you aren't looking for a hum. You could have bought the K&N sport filter for your stock box.
Kumar - I hear a mean hit when i gun it with my cheapo ebay intake.

aem uses the equivelant to k&n, thats mostly what you pay for when you buy aem. That why everyone on here gets a cheap ebay intake and puts a k&n cone on it

Regardless, the best performance/money ratio comes from an eBay cheapo kit with an upgraded K&N filter. Buying a name brand intake for more only gets a name really and maybe a bit better looks (I do really like the look of the AEM v2, but not enough to justify spending $300 on one.)

When I heard a hum, I thought it was something else, like a problem. I also switched my AEM with a Weapon R Cold Air Intake. The hum was just reduced a bit and the performance is still great as it was with AEM. Now, I take it as my spare in case anything goes wrong. I got some few point with this thread. Wonderful!

I don't get any hum from my V2 and I never have. I only get the occasional whistle but it rarely happens and it's not that bad. The Subaru we have makes that whistling noise sometimes, also.

When I go WOT with that intake I love it. Sounds so beastly.

The hum is just a harmonic vibration that builds with air rushing through the tube. Mine sounds like a spaceship or something out of the Jetson's at idle. If you want the hum to go away, you need to break up the air flow. You could use a spacer with fins to defuse the air. The down side to this is restriction. Our intakes are kind of like a dijereedoo. If you could make a 6ft intake, it would sound low and freaky. Sounds like a potential mod. Convert a dijereedoo into an intake. it would sound freaky.

An Aussie CL with Dijereedoo intake and exhaust. How fun.

I always thought of the UFO sound like blowing over the top of a beer bottle, its the same thing except through suction insted. The main differance ( and autoexpert can back me up) is that the weapon R intake pipe is cut at an angle insted of flush across. Its tough to make a broke bottle whistle like one with a flush top, and the science works the same way here.

Wrapping it in dynomat doesnt really help. I've done it, then sprayed it with rubberized stuff and it still hums like a mofo.

intake

lol o well. I just figured that it stopped the vib off the sub so it would stop the vib from the air rushing through it.

Strapping it down and securing it is the only way to lessen the hum, also putting a k&n filter on there seems to help, at least it did when I switched to my CAI

SRI's do hum like a UFO.

But teh CAI's, even on 2nd gens, I haven't heard too much complaining about.

I have a CAI on my 2nd gen and I just hear the loud whoosh when I turn it off. During cruising speeds I can hear a slight whistle sound but nothing extreme at all.

i think that cold air intake system is just a waste of money. if you want sound and maybe a 1hp gain just take out the resonator and it will be LOUD. why spend 100+ on intake system when your only gaining abbout 3hp? save the money and spend on somthing wisely. that what i think dont flame me for it

But what you think is smart spending, may be a waste of money for another. Just ones of those arguements that won't go anywhere.

But hey, you have to start somewhere. And for most, everyone starts with either springs, or intake....
