sometimes when i accelerate i hear an farting noise from under my car. I'm thinking its coming from the exhaust possibly rubbing against something but i'm not sure. Any suggestions?

Oh beer farts are the worst.

You might try to get under the car and shake the exhaust and see if it does the same thing.

wait, now that I think about it, my accord does that too... I havent looked into it yet, but I want to believe its just the heat shield around the catalitic converter... either that or one of the heat shields mounted to the underside of the car. If I get to it before anyone else does, I'll let you all know what was goin on...

Its a little embarrassing farting around the chika's... let alone having your car make funny noises!

I'm almost positive it's not the heatshield around the cat. I went under my car about 10 times to check, and even put two clamps around my cat....didn't do jack. So it's either my heatshield above the piping that's rattling, or it's the resonator vibrating. I have yet to decipher which of the two it is....yeah, please let us know if anybody finds a solution!

ive had the same problem. Always happens at the same rpms. It usually happens when im stuck behind someone driving the speed limit. When I dirive it fast it doesnt happen. The only way to make it stop is to hit the gas a little more. It sounds like my car is growling at me for driving slow. Its sounds kinda like its comeing from the rear of the car. It never happens tho when I wanna show it to someone, like a mechanic

mine did that top, but I cured it! All you need to do is take the cat off...and then bend the heat shiel a little bit to make it quiet, or take it completly off...my 1991 accord did that to.

Hey black97, did your noise occur at the same rpms and have the same characteristics as we have described above and in previous threads? If so, does it cure the problem 100%? Do you have a 5spd or an Auto?

Has anyone else removed the heat shield completely that had this same problem??? I know someone else said they did this and it didn't cure anything.

I've got a five speed and mine does it all the time. It is hell on earth. For me it always happens in 2nd gear when i'm not accelerating really fast, basically when your in cruise mode. I'm dying to get rid of it. When your cruizin with your girl and your car poopz and you're embarrased (cuz you and your car are one) and you give her the "sorry" face. Can't deal with that sh*t nomore, need a remedy thanks for bringing it up. I thought I was the only one.

Nah, diddy you're not alone.
That noise pisses me off, and it always happens when I'm speeding up. . . we really need to find a solution and post that.

Call me stupid(or newbie) but shouldn't a heat shield be shielding heat and not farting
You said that taking off the heat shield solved the problem of the noise but do you have any over-heating problems now?

long, but the answer!

The heat shield doesn't affect the engine any. The engine is going to be hotter than the exhaust gas is already. The heat shield would protect the underbody of the car - and somewhat the inside of the car - from getting hot from the exhaust gas. If the tack welds were to give out as they seem to in these cars QUITE often, then the heat shield would vibrate. The reason it only happens during the certain RPM range (~1600-2000 RPM) is because of resonance. When the heat shield vibrates at that specific rate, it makes a 'nice' loud noise. Removing the heat shield should solve the problem. But if you want to be nice and keep the heat shield, just take it to a shop (or yourself if you have the stuff) and have them re-weld it. They would only charge a few bucks for this unless they are assholes. If you know your mechanic well he will probably do it for free!

Would the shield move easily if you tried to move it? Would the original welds be broken? I can weld, but I've never looked under at the heat shield. What would I be welding is my question?

Does anyone happen to have a picture of their heat shield???

Its more or less just a little plate that has small tack welds around the outside. Just pop a few tack welds on it or you could even TIG weld around the outside if your so inclined. Its a real quick fix. It would take longer to jack the car up than anything else.

your catalytic converter is breaking up, I had the same problem for a while and then I replaced my catalytic converter and that did the job

What kind of car do you have? and did you have the exact (same characteristics, RPM range, etc.) same noise as we do?

I just took my 98 2.3 5speed in to the dealer for a rattle that's been bugging me. Turns out there's something rattling around in my catalytic converter. They're going to replace it for me. The CAT is under 8 year/80,000 mile warranty. If you get under your car and knock the CAT pretty hard you can hear something rattling around in it, if that's your problem.

I just registered here. I've been reading these forums for about a week but I just figured I could add something useful now. Hope I did this right. I never post to forums.

I brought my car into the dealer and they checked it out and said it was the muffler. They said for I would have to put a whole exhaust because mufflers don't come separately from acura...and a new exhaust costs over $400 for just parts...not labour.
