Engine light is on...

On my way to work my engine light came on. The car doesn't run differently, drives just like normal. I was wondering if anyone knew how to read obdII codes without an obd scanner. On my 91 civic all I had to do was lift the carpet and turn the ignition, however our car isn't that simple. I have a 3.0 by the way. Any info would help. My engine light only started coming on ever since I put my short ram AEM intake in. This is twice in three months. All I did last time was disconnect my battery to reset the ecu and hasn't come on since then and that was over 2 1/2 months ago.

you can do the paper clip technique

all you do it go look under your glove box, i should say behind it, there is a harness there i think its blue, un clip it so you can see it better, then take a paper clip and jumper the two sides of the wires, i mean, stick one end of the paper clip into one side and then the other into the other side

then turn on the ignition, your light with blink inside, its the abs or check engine, i think both will do it but not too sure, then your codes will show first the first column and you count the blinks, then will pause for 1 sec then it will start again, this is your second number, if it only has one set you will notice it, it will have like a 3 second pause, there is a member on here that had the code on his site

this is the exact link to it

http://home.insightbb.com/~niedejb/

once there you click on "Resources"

it will bring up the code checker and tell you exactly what codes mean what and a pic of the harness im talking about, if you cant find it aol im me @ jgiguere17 and i can try to help you out the best i can

hope this helped

engine light

hey 97acura3.0cl I tried e-mailing you but it was sent back saying your address had fatal error or something. I live san diego now but still visit my family in san jose off of capitol expressway. Also, what is the plug behind the ashtray?

I got the codes but not quite sure.

well, i turned the ignition to the on position and the engine light blinked 8 times in a row. They were consecutive so I wouldn't know if they were short or long blinks and all the pauses in between were short. I think it gave me a code of 8(Top Dead Center Sensor Malfunction) or 80(Exhaust Gas Recirculation Insufficient Flow). How can I correct either of these. All or any information will help greatly. Man I love this community. Like I've said before, A-CL rocks

80 is the code. 8 would be short flashes.

if u got less than 100k or was it 80k miles the egr valve should be covered by acura. almost half of the 3.0's i know of have the same problem. theres a special fix they need to do. if u have more than 100k miles, then ur lookin at like 300$+....

How do I know if the EGR valve is still covered by acura. Although a '97 I only have about 62,xxx miles on the car. Also, should I take off my short ram intake and re-install the stock air box so that they won't tell me that it's not covered due to modifications?

you have a 1997? 3.0 CL Premium? You're covered up to 150k.

My '98 3.0 was covered until 80k (I think your '97 is to at least 80k, too). Acura should do the service without an issue. I checked a Honda dealership (the similar year V6 Accords had the same problem) and the quote was $295 parts and labor.

Good Luck w/ the repair
