Do we need a chip for headers and CAI's?
Do we need a chip for headers and CAI's?
My buddy, who KNOWS cars, told me that Honda doesnt use a mass air flow sensor and that Honda's ecus just run in a continous loop, resubmitting the same info over and over. THis means your ecu wont realize you are receiving more air in from a cold air intake, and wont dump more fuel to compromise the air-fuel ratio to gain performance. He said basically the same thing about the headers, your ecu wont notice the difference, so it wont have any gains, and the only way these parts do any good is having an aftermarket chip put in. I was told that a chip wont really do much good until you get into aftermarket cams and shit like that.
Anyone know how much of that is true?

This is why this forum sucks so bad. Everyone talks about newbs and how much they suck, intstead of realizing that everyone has different levels of automotive knowledge. Some know almost nothing, but are here to learn from the more experienced Acura owners that have accrued knowledge from working on their cars, and from learning things from others on this site that actually helped and didnt just write worthless posts about how many posts they have crapped out into the forum about nothing to get there post numbers to 3000 in 6 months.
If you know how to help, please do so. If you dont, keep your worthless opinions to your self.

98CL,
1) I believe you reset the ECU by disconnecting the negative terminal of the battery. However, this may not be necessary, because after you drive for a while with your mods, the ECU automatically determines the optimal air/fuel mixture. Resetting the ECU just speeds up this process. I think thats a primitive explanation, I could be wrong.
2.) Do a search for VAFC or VAFC II. It is a device that, I believe allows for some adjustment of air/fuel ratio and VTEC engagement. I think the consensus is that this something to look into after you have intake, headers, exhaust.
3.) There are some good members on this board. Some of the older guys have upgraded their cars and moved on. As time goes by, used CL's become cheaper, and the average age of CL owners goes down. This is just a natural thing.
4.) You can usually find answers to your questions by searching first.

you can also reset the ecu by pulling the ecu fuse, and disconnectin the battery also

I got my vafc2 for $185 used from another member herere. i'd say it's well worth it, but I don't think I would pay the MSRP of $350+.
I just got my thermoblok spacers today, so the next time i'm able to save up enough to get a magnaflow exhaust installed then I will install everything ele and tune the vafc for $90 an hour.

To everyone who answered my thread in a helpful manner, I sincerely thank you. Your help is what keeps new people coming back to the site to learn more, and then eventually teach others more. I dont mean to sound like a cry baby,
but it seems like every time I ask a question I get punked for being a newb, it gets old.

Chips do have it's benefits on Honda's. Not so much on NA motors, but still have it's benefits. I agree that the VAFC doesn't do much because it can't even control ignition timing.
Go here http://pgmfi.org/ and read all about ECU's. They chipped non-OBD and OBD-1 I think, but still nothing for our OBD-2's as far as I know.
