Cold Air Induction vs. Short Intakes

Can anyone tell me the difference between a CAI and a short intake? I have a '97 CL 2.2 5-Speed that I bought a week ago, and I would like to make this my starting point.

Many thanks!

with a CAI, the filter sits down inside the bumper... so it takes in mostly outside, cooler air... a short ram intake keeps the filter inside the engine compartment... they are cheaper, but take in a lot more hot air... being its inside the engine compartment.

You get a little more power out of a CAI... but there is the possibility of sucking up water and hydrolocking the engine... from what I have heard, the AEM bypass valve will eliminate that problem.

Many thanks!! Looks like the CAI for me, and the valve seems like a must-have too.

Unless you're planning to run through puddles that will completely submerge the filter, you don't need the bypass valve.

Installing the bypass valve will reduce the HP gain you get from the CAI.

Good luck with your new CAI!

yo dog, i got my intake placed
where the filter is by the battery,
i was gonna do a cold air,
but i got the suggestion from local speed shops in my area
to keep the filter placed where it is
just to further prevent any water getting into the engine.
the sound is still aggresive
i love it when i rev the engine high on second gear
take it to around 5000rpm.
then drop to 3rd.
thats' therapy!

That was the old bypass where the foam would get sucked up. They fixed that already and they sent rings to fix it to the previous owners.

im with him, short rams are just more bad ass sounding. Loss of a few crank horses are worth it. The short ram sounds sooo good, especially with VTEC! I also think they look better.
