Code P0171 System too lean?

Hi guys I did a quick search on this and it sounds like one of the possible culprits is the primary o2 sensor. Where is this located on my 2.3 CL?

What are the other (most likely) causes? Should I be replacing the o2 sensor first?

Gas mileage seems ok...

Thoughts?

There are 2 o2 sensors, one on the cat, and one on the header

Thanks Ack.... Is there any way to tell which one is more likely to be throwing this code?

Seeing that my gas mileage is ok, could it still be an o2 sensor issue?

Easiest way is to pull the code from an OBD II reader, most auto parts stores should do this for you for free, I know autozone does. If not, you can use a paper clip to get the code to flash, there's a green 2 pin connecter under the glove box that you use to get the code to flash and then look up the code here.

Here's another description on how to do it

Here's some more info about the o2 sensors also

It's a sensor that should be at the end of the catalytic converter. Kinda like the following:

You'll need a o2 sensor socket to replace it.

It's a simple unplug connector, unscrew sensor, apply anti-seize to new sensor threads, then screw in sensor, plug in connector. Reset CEL and complete 3 drive cycles.

Thanks.

I've already pulled the code (P0171). Cleared it once and it shows up again about 3 weeks later.

Question is, instead of replacing both o2 sensors, can I assume it's the one near the CAT?

The code usually tells you which bank the o2 sensors are in

According to http://repairpal.com/OBD-II-Code-P0171-and-P0174
P0171 is bank 1. Would this be the sensor near the CAT?

Alright... Thanks guys.

So I went ahead and ordered the OEM "front" sensor for $100 and change. Where is that one located?

If you get under the car, should be around where the header meets the cat

Just a thought.... Running to lean on some cars could be a vaccum leak...

check the vacuum leak first as it is a much cheaper and easier fix...

check for plugged Fuel Filter or weak Fuel Pump or Plugged or dirty Fuel Injectors
