check engine light

when the check engine light comes on does the car go into a safe mode were it wont run to its full potential reason is my o2 sensor is bad in my cat

the answer is no. But if your cat is bad (just a sidenote) then you will get increased backpressure which will make your acceleration lag to hell and you will feel like your driving a 90 hp saturn.
