Hey Guys/Gals

Last night I was driving and all of a sudden my "check engine" light came on. So this morning I did the paper clip trick and it came back with error code 12. Can only confirm this as

P1491
12
EGR Valve Lift Insufficient Detected

P1498
12
EGR Valve Lift Sensor High Voltage

I am not sure if that is right, how much would this cost to fix.

what yr is your cl?
97's have a 14yr, 150,000 emissions warranty for the egr thing.
im not sure what it is for the 98-99 though.

 

Its a 98' with about 125K miles. Maybe I should look into it.

 

If my car does not fall under extended warranty, any idea on how much this would cost to fix?

also, there's a DIY EGR valve cleaning somewhere, search for EGR valve and you should see it...

Read that thread carefully. Its around 250 - 300 for the dealer to fix, but its a real easy fix if you follow the service bulletin that is posted in that thread. PM me if you need more help.

 

I am a complete n00b, this looks like a job I will have to take in for service.

I was able to get my buddy to clean out the EGR valve. The check engine light it off for now
