changing brakes?

im trying to change my brakes for the first time on a 97 3.0 and im not sure how to change em. i cant open the caliper. i think theres like 2 bolts in the back of em and ive seen my uncle do em b4 when it was his car but theres some kinda death grip on em. anyone know how to loosen them so i change em? am i doing anything wrong? all i got up to was taking out the tire and trying to loosen the bolts.

the bolts are stock on pretty hard, i had to use DW-40 and than put the socket wrench and used the hammer to smack it down. once you loosen it one bit your all set

The dreaded 97 pressed rotors. That is a pain. When I did mine with my friend we had to use lots and lots of liquid wrench.

ok a trick i learned from a mechanic.. always keep pieces of pipe close by. its good to have one thats like 2 ft and one thats 3-1/2 feet. all u have to do is put it over the handle of the rachet and... viola you will have more "torque" to take off the bolt. it works everytime for me

I need to change brake myself..but it seems like im gonna have to "turn" the rotors. do you have to turn the rotors each time you change the pads?

you should only have to turn your rotors when they get warped. If you are warpping them, dont wash your car after you have been driving all day. Cold water, hot metal. BAD.....lay off the brakes a little bit. Or if you cant lay off the brakes get vented rotors.

Are you guys sure that you have to remove the mounting bolt for the Caliper? Most of the time that 'death grip' from the factory is there for a reason. Most new cars have easy release pins or brackets to change out pads.

I am not familiar with this cars system. If I am completely off base, let me know.

you are right...you want to loosen the lower bolt then you can just flip up part of the caliper and take out the old pads in put in the new ones

Invest in a set of 1/2"-drive ratchet and sockets. Sears has a nice starter set for $39. You'll eventualy need them for the rear breaks.

there should be a clip that holds the pads in and the caliper, and i think one nut i cant remember

but PM dustbuster4 he has detailed pics of a brake job i think

for new pads you need to take off teh caliper to get then in and lube them up
