CD Install/XM Radio

I'm planning on purchasing a new head unit tonight with XM radio. Anyone used XM? Also, how do I remove the factory CD player? Do I have to remove the entire dash?

You can check out the thread I started entitled "Acura MP3.0 CL", shows pictures of what you need to remove. You simply pry with a thing flathead screwdriver around the outer black plastic that's around the dash, it'll pop out, then you remove two screws under the CD headunit, and voila, that's it.

It depends on what year CL you have, MontrealCL's thread will help you if you have a 97, if you have a 98 or 99 theres a few extra steps you have to take.

Remove the CD holder on the bottom of the Console by pulling up on it, there are 2 screws underneath that to remove. Then remove the cup holder and there is one screw at an angle pointing tward the front of the car, remove that. The console will then lift up at the back and with a little manuvering it will become free from the front part of the console. There are 2 screws where the 2 console parts split apart holding the wood trim in place, remove those. Then one more screw behind the ash tray to be removed, then the wood trim piece will pop out of place and the hazard button and clock can be unplugged. Then there are 2 screws under the deck, pointing tward the front of the car that have to be removed, and the deck will come out. Also, if you have a manual transmission you have to pull down on the shift boot where it meets the shift knob to seperate the 2, then unscrew the shift knob.

I am planning on getting a Sony deck and the pioneer XM thing. I am not looking to upgrade my sound system at all, ever. I'll buy new speakers when the stock ones blow.

As for XM being a rip off, you obviously havent listened to it and dont have a need for it. I drive 150+ miles a day, through remote mountains where I can only pick up 1-3 radio stations. I get tired of switching CDs and I like talk radio. So there.

150 miles a day!!!!!!!

Wow, that is a lot. Why do you drive so far?

You deserve a couple dvd players
and a starbucks mounted in your
ride for driving that range.

Yeah, XM radio is cool. Don't you have to pay monthly for the service? How much does an XM radio go for?

I drive 69 miles each way to work from school daily. Kind of sucks, but I enjoy driving most of the time so it isnt too bad.
XM costs $9.99 a month for 100 digital channels, 30 are commercial free. The hardware runs around $300 if you have an XM compatable CD player, or you can get a complete setup for $300 that uses an FM modulator, but that defeats the purpose of having digital radio if you ask me. More info at www.xmradio.com.

I just might have to wait until the hardware gets a little cheaper (Tivo, DirectTV both went down after a year or so) and the antennas get a little smaller. But its still one of the most promising technologies out there.
