AWW CRAP!!! I Think its the Tranny!!?!?!?!
SHIT!!!!! Everyone tells me how bad our Transmissions are and someone told me to adv. a new trans every 40 thou miles...some people have been though 3....ive got 87K on my 97' 3.0 and to what i belive is the stock 1st tranny. (i bought the car used from the dealer. . . u never know what they might hide) But yea, everyone says to really test it out, wait for cold weather and try shifting from P to D4 and see what happens.....heres what mines doing. ....
I put the break on and shift to D4 and when i let off the break, the car kinda jerks forward and then back and then forward again and then it starts to go....DOES THIS MEAN IM ABOUT TO LOSE THE TRANNY!?!??!

what about when you first drive your car in the morning, and its pretty cold out, and between 1st and 2nd gear it has a clutching effect on it(its an auto by the way) it kind of revs high before it shifts, acting as though its pushing the clutch in a second time right before shifting..??

Nope. My tranny died Saturday on my 97 3.0 . It more or less just came out of nowhere. Dealer said 2-3K for a rebuilt/used one, but there are a few shops around me that will do it for about 1500. I am furious. Can't afford this.

Just a follow-up here... I want to describe what happened and see if anybody has a clue as to the extent of how F'ed I am:
A few months back, I started feeling the light thud when the car was revving down and I gave it gas. Nothing too bad, but annoying. I took it to the dealer at about 75K miles to have the tranny fluid changed. Thud disappeared and everything was great...for about 3 weeks. Then, out of nowhere, I was just driving, came to a stop sign, went to give it gas and it started slipping. It would slip for a second, catch, slip, catch and within two miles (the distance back to my driveway) it was not moving at all. It will work at very very low RPMs (less than 2.5K) but dies soon.
I know of some electrical problems with them, but I'm guessing that this is one of the bands slipping. It's not grenaded since there don't seem to be any gear problems, but will I still need a complete rebuild/replacement? Any advice/experience would be great since I'm shuddering to drop almost 2Gs on work that may or may not do the same thing in 6 months.

sorry to bring this back up but...
I just got my 90,000 mile service and they told me they found metal shavings on the magnetic transmission plug. I figured after 90,000 miles this would be normal and they didn't seem too concerned. I haven't really felt any problems though - any opinions?
also, can someone explain that automatic transmission test to me? I've never heard of that before - you but the brake on (hand brake or pedal?) and shift from P to D4 while the engine is on? isn't that what you normally do to drive?
