dunno, teching ...

overheated to stall 2mos ago, radiator was cracked. replaced with new aftermarket.
3 step radiator flush, eventually filled with new 60/40 distilled mix
drove 30miles, A/C has been lame lately ... pulled into my driveway, saw coolant dripping, fans were full-blast
popped hood, coolant was coming down the sides of the overflow reservior - took off cap, coolant was boiling over
left parked level overnight, overflow was empty. brown chunky sludgy shit in the overflow
checked oil, off the dipstick. i've had it a year and never checked it. (like a high school girl)
added a quart, filled reservior and radiator. ran it 3min, oil is between the dots and looks clean. oil cap shows sludge and no bubbles
radiator full, oil / gas looking film on top or radiator and reservior

wtf?

haven't ran her since except the 3min to was normal then. Afraid to drive in case it overheats aren't I risking warping the head if the gasket is bad?

Bought a thermostat for thirty bucks before the dealership closed. My mechanic said bring it in Monday and for a hundred I can test and tell you if it's the head gasket.

oil in reservoir tank is a sign of a blown headgasket, regardless of thermostat.

my dad said it sounds like exhaust gas is pushing the coolant out of the motor and heating it up

wouldnt there be coolant in the oil too or just oil in the coolant?

Definitely think there's a headgasket issue with what you described. I don't think a new thermostat will do much.

did that, coolant danced. big bubbles came up through and the level dropped. temp guage stayed on cold and i didnt run it long.

you guys think i ought to buy the head gasket from the dealership today so i can take it to the shop with the car on monday? i want to save the 2 days ordering time...

$800 on a head gasket job (188k on motor) or $395 on a low-miles motor from attarco?

After labor costs your gonna be well above $800 dropping in an engine. I would check around on the head gasket, should def. be able to get it done cheaper than $800. Sucks though, for sure. Maybe time to drop in an H22?

the reason there is oil in the coolant is that when the head gasket is blown oil that goes through the valvetrain seeps thourgh into the cooling chambers around the cylinders into the block. and end up in your reserve tank.

I can do the swap myself just not looking forward to it - put a motor and two trannies in my db1 teg. 40k attarco with 6mo warranty sounds good, my new radiator and aem sri won't be wasted. H22 sounds even better but 1500 and I don't know what's involved...

Well if you can handle swapping an engine you sure as shit should be able to R&R the headgasket, just do it yourself if your lookin to spend the least amount of money. At 188k your engine's just gettin broken in

ya I could r&r I'm worried about the previous overheat though and the chances I'd have to have it machined. Never had anything done can I just walk my head into a shop or do they deal with mechanics only? That felt like a stupid question.

100% certan u have a bad headgasket. That gunk is formed when either oil is in the coolant or coolant mixes with the combustion gases.

You should definitely be able to take it into a machine shop without being a mechanic, although they may give a mechanic who brings work in regularly a better price.

Chances are if you get your head resurfaced and replace the gasket and torque down the bolts to the correct specs it will be runnin great again so long as your valvesprings are ok.

leaning heavy toward swap as I don't know the condition of my timing belt and 40k + warranty is very desirable

yeah you're belt should be due for the second change any time soon.

It all comes down to what's the most cost effective, so maybe a swap would be, plus you can always sell the old motor or part it out for some $$
