Automatic shifting on 3.0
Automatic shifting on 3.0
What up all,
I did a research but could not find the answer. On the 3.0 what's the proper way to shift the 4 speeds? Do you keep your foot on the gas pedal while shifting or do you let go? On my ohter car (RX7) I'm used to: Shift, clutch pedal, then hit the gas pedal hard, I have a high performance clutch. Thanks....

Thanks, but let me ask you this, when you shift from 1 to 2 or 3 to D3, At what RPM are you taking it to? According to the owners manual, 1St gear can go to 40 MPH and 2ND gear up to 75Mph at which the RPM is at about 4500-5000. Is this okay?
I don't have any experience with the 3.0 auto, but the valve body is automatic and it will shift when it wants to shift. I'm sure after you shift there is a substantial lag before the trans engages the next gear. I would say just leave it in gear and put the pedal to the metal
Of course, 3.0 owners would probably give you much better advice.

They make shift point kits for the "muscle cars" and the same principles can be applied to the 3.0 trans. However, you're going to have a difficult time finding anyone who has experience with modifying the clutch packs in this particular tranny. I assume the Level 10 trannies have shift point kits, but there are conflicting reports as to the quality and durability of their products.
That being said, I still think your best bet is to let the trans shift itself. Just make sure you are not in overdrive cause it might shift 3-4 prematurely.

I think I F%&ked up my tranny. The other day I redlined it on D4 and now when in D4 it sort of skips until it catches gear. also when shifting to reverse I hear a loud "gunk" sound. Could this mean my tranny is f@%ked or is it some adjustment that it needs. When shifting from manually I don't have this problem.

man I don't know what you've done to your tranny, thats all a bit wierd.

So when it skips before catching 4th gear, can you still accelerate?
I get a GUNK sound sometimes on my 3.0 auto for obvious reasons (when I try to shift the forward-moving car into reverse)
I also get a gunk sound on an old manual, but thats probably because I beat it up too much and the gear sticks.

Yes It still accelerates but when I floor it (which I do all the time) it takes a second to get in gear and it wasn't doing it before I redlined it. It just doesn't have the power it had before.

dude, i think you screw up your tranny. you should never floor the car all the time especially on an auto...
i would say take her in soon b4 it breaks down on you when you're going thru the hood.

Thats no good. I'm no mechanic so I can't really diagnose the problem, but it seems like your frequent pedal2metal is confusing the planetary gearset and wierding out the power delivery. When you floor the pedal, auto trannys usually downshift. By downshifting and achieving redline too quickly, you might have popped something that keeps this smooth.
You could read http://www.howstuffworks.com/automat...nsmission2.htm and try to get a feel for your problem
For now, treat your car like a genteel lady while driving her, and take her in for a gyno checkup . good luck

The 'clunk' you speak of I have always experienced with my manual cars that I have had (91 accord, and now 97 2.2cl) I have only encountered when going from a forward movement and putting it into reverse before the car is completely stopped ...as for the rest, I'de be careful ...our cars are fast, but they are no muscle cars ... they do have limitations, however they are the cutest cars (within a reasonable price range) on the roads ...just my 2 ...peace -dark
darkkaaos, your clunk is entirely unrelated to the original poster's clunk. Try shifting into first before you shift into reverse if you are still rolling. This will stop the synchros and prevent your "clunk".
As for the clunk in the automatic, it doesn't sound good. I've never heard of such a problem, but what do you mean you redlined in 4th? Were you going top speed, or redlined whiled shifting into 4th?

Thanks all, based on my problem, is this something that can be easily fixed or do I need a new tranny? As of today my car still drives well and all, it's just that when ever I floor it, this happens.
This is just a guess, but it could be either your overdrive solenoid or clutch. If it's the solenoid, it would be relatively easy to diagnose and fix, but anything else and you're looking at major $$$. Take it to a transmission place and see if they have encountered similar problems. Good luck.
