Auto hp lose

Ok might be dumb question but why does and automatic tranny loose hp? Just wondering. also how much do we loose with the 3.0 cl?

all transmissions cause parasitic loss, there are gears and such to turn, and doing so requires energy, autos have more crap to turn, so more loss

We have a 25% power loss in our drivetrain. Therefore our 200hp engine puts down roughly 150whp.

Like Hobo said, it takes power to get things moving. If you would like to know exatly what, just ask.

The main thing that robs power is the torque converter in the tranny right... its what makes the auto shift smoothly. physics class is so underrated!

ok I getting you but I still want to know more, like be more specific and breaking down like how it takes away the power like when its doing etc...

The question we should be asking is, "How can we keep our 3.0's from losing HP?"

Great Question, I've been noticing a power loss also. How can we prevent a power loss???????

um,

the power loss is contstant.

it is simply the difference in the hp the engine makes at the flywheel vs. what it puts to the wheels through the drivetrain.

a more efficient transmission would yeild less loss. ie. lightweight parts or better design.

more moving parts and gears and added weight = more drivetrain loss...friction, energy being converted to heat, and energy used to spin gears is energy lost before being put to the ground...in a perfect system, the moving parts wouldn't weigh anything and have no friction...the closer you get to that system the less power you lose

easiest way to not lose so much power through the drive train is get lighter and smaller wheels and tires

If you really want to gain HP you need to get away from an automatic. You will never solve your power loss problem with this type of transmission. A six-speed manual would be your best bet, but even then you will still lose a small portion of your engine's power in the clutching. One thing you can certainly do with your automatic to get better power transfer is by upgrading the T/C, another thing you might consider is keeping the tranny cool with an external cooler. Less friction=more power. Fluid dynamics is where an automatic transmission derives power to move the wheels. This system will naturally lose energy. A manual has no fluid dynamic aspects that serve this purpose. the gears are mated and controled by linkages not fluid preasures. Hense, you do not have to produce internal fluid preasures to induce shifting to interlock the various planetary gear combinations. The true dynamics of how automatic transmissions work are very complicated but you can see it in action if you go to http://auto.howstuffworks.com/automa...ansmission.htm. Very facinating stuff.

actually there is fluids in a manual tranny. if u have low fluid u will not go any where. most of them have actually 2 pumps, one to push te fluid over the sicro's, and another to lube the differential. tho gears do have ~80% to do with a manual tranny. maybee 15% fluid and the rest is friction.

Good point wilp99. Not meaning to say a manual runs dry, just they don't use the fluid for the same purpose. In fact, most use motor oil as lubricant rather than Dextron Type fluids.

uhhh...maybe you guys didn't realize the best tranny to have in drag is an auto.......as long as it's effiecient....

fastest supras are auto...you cant get the times with a manual...

you can make your auto more effecient with high stall torque convertor, shift kit, and a better clutch pack.....and you can possibly get a better gear ratio if you wanna get into drag....

so where do you get all that and what kind of torque converter, shift kit, and clutch pad do you need to get

This is very true, too bad there aren't more "efficient" autos out there...

three words....doctor evil expensive.

they run bout 5g's i called them and asked if i could just have them send me the parts and ill rebuild my own using thier beefier parts, and they said no, and it would be too complicated for a do it yourselfer. and warranties, yada yada. none the less, tho its less work to do the dr evil tranny, id rather spend the 5g's and get a 6 speed.

ajtcl: the oil is a gear lubricant only. i usually use 80w90w on almost everything that has gears, manual trannies, differentials. yea its petrolium based, but has tons of additives in it to keep it from breakin down.

the mustang t-5 tranny takes dextron III. i would say that half of the cars with transmissions (instead of transaxles) and are rear wheel drive take dextron III

This is why the Dr. Evil tranny is so popular, because it has all of the above.
