Advancing the Timing
Advancing the Timing
3.0 V6 owners help me out
1. The usual technique of moving the distributor to advance timing is not applicable to our cars because our distributor is permanently situated, is this correct?
2. Can we get an aftermarket distributor that you will be able to move? If so which one?
3. I heard that one of the guys on V6performance.net, who dynoed at 211 whp NA physically cracked open the casing and had his mechanics advance the timing. What do you guys think of this? Does it sound like it would work right?
4. MSD makes a timing controller that is supposed to let you retard or advance the timing. Their website says that it works with almost any car that has a distributor. Do you guys have any opinions of this?

you have to short out the service connector while you do it otherwise it will automaticly correct it. Its the same connector that you use to make the CEL throw codes. Not sure for a 3.0 though...
you cant do it through the vafc. only a hondata system is capable of that or those shitty ebay "spoon chips". there is no need to advance it anyway. honda set it where it was for a reason. like wilp said, unless you are spraying or doing heavy boosting there is no need to change it.

well, not extremely rich, but a little richer than necesary. Thats why the VAFC actually does any good. It needs alittle adjustment here and htere. I'm sure you could get 5-10 more hp across the whole rpm range with little adjustments in timing.
Guys, it's commonly known that advancing your timing results in more power (you just gotta use a higher octane). Obvously there's room for some advancement cuz Honda meant for us to use the lowest octance possible AND they have to cover their asses (and their reliablility rep) by playing it safe.
If there was any way to accurately advance the timing w/o it correcting itself, I'm positive that there would be some good gains.

do the 3.0's even have a knock sensor? I was reading a post in the second gen forum by scalbert that seemed to imply that they didn't. kinda confused now.
So if we were to replace our ignition system with an MSD ignition kit we could advance the timing? Or would th eonly way be to make the engine think it's always getting cold air ike the "speed chips" they sell on ebay, lol.
