98 CL Manual Tranny fluid change

Hello all,

I have been looking for instructions on DYI tips for manual tranny fluid change on a 98 cl 5 speed. I could not find any thing on the internet and on this forum. I am kindda new to DIY's and do not wanna risk my DD. If possible, can anyone post the pics showing the location of the drain bolt if any. I am under an impression that you have to change the fluid via the level check bolt (if that's what it's called).

Does this need any special tools ? I have been reading through the forum and see that most of them need a machine. Is this a fairly easy job ??

Noob..

Offtopic: I had mine changed by a mechanic 3 days ago. Shifting is so much smoother!

its a pretty easy job, just normal sockets and a pump and you should be fine.

Like someone who hasn't done any carwork, I have no idea what you are talking about and I obviously don't have any of that. I'm not the OP, but just saying.

you need a 3/8" drive ratchet for the drain bolt, its located on the bottom of the trans pass sd, only bolt with a square on the head(cause it takes the 3/8'" drive) i like to get extra fluid so i get about 4-5 quarts(most of the time it takes 3) the fill bolt is above the drain, next the passenger sd axle if i remeber right. its a big honking bolt that looks like a oil pan dran plug, it's a 17mm. i useto use a pump to get the fluid in but now i have a funnel with a tube on it, work easier for me to use.
if you do this i'd atleast get a chilton or hayes manual, if you can't find one for a cl get one for a 94-97 accord the motor/trans are the same

hey bud,

It looks like a very easy job. I have never done before, but you gave me the idea to change mine also.
I have a copy of 1994-97 Honda Accord Repair Manual on my computer and I has step by step instructions on how to change MT Oil. There is images that pin-points where the bolts are located.

PM me your email and I will send it to.

What do you usually use? I've been thinking about trying out some GM synchromesh when I go to change mine soon. It needs it.

I haven't changed it on my CL, but on my GSR motor, there was a drain plug at the bottom of the tranny. Then there was a bolt on the side where the fluid would pour out when it reached the correct fluid level. I took out the speed sensor to fill the tranny since it had a bigger hole.

Honda tranny fluid is probably good, but I purchased Pennzoil Synchromesh from Advance Autoparts since it's half the price of the GM stuff and it's exactly the same. It got rid of my 3rd gear grind and shifted noticeably smoother than whatever was in it before.

All,

Thank you for the support and all the help..well..the CL is my first car and hence all the noob questions..It has over 154K on it...going strong ....I got her around 149K and have not had problems since..There is some hesitation at times to get it in reverse..not a big thing though...

I wanted to change the tranny fluid (for the first time) as a part of preventive maintainence...not having any troubles with it whatsoever...may be previous owners knew how to drive a stick...ANywho...I am writing to let it be known how much I appreciate ya all's help...

@TMO: I could not PM you for some stupid reason...It would be great if you could send a copy of manual to indryaankur@gmail.com...You made my life a bit easier..thanks a ton...

Noob...

You need a couple more posts before you can pm, glad the info you got on here was helpful, with that many miles, you may want to look into changing your clutch at somepoint too, especially if it's not grabbing all the time

I had the dealer do mine in late 2007. It has to be done so infrequently I don't even think it's listed as a scheduled maintenance item in the manual. I don't attempt to do the brake fluid myself either, for how often it needs it. If the job makes you uncomfortable just have the dealer do it because you will probably never need it again. Also I don't like changing to non factory fluid with either manual or automatic transmissions
