90k, clutch already dead! $700 to replace...
'Sup fellas?
My '99 2.3CL just hit 90.000 miles and what happens, all of a sudden? The clutch slips, real bad. So bad that in 4th and 5th gear I have absolutely no pick up. Knowing that I'm a good stick shift driver (I started with stick shift, never drove auto), don't you think my clutch dying at 90k is premature?
Anyways, I took it to my mechanic and I'm having an OEM clutch on it. The clutch was $220, with labor, everything will cost $700. He's a great mechanic and I know him personally, that's why I won't bitch too much about the price. I know his job will be flawless.
Also, I'm trying to sell my Acura before I move to Malaysia. PM me for prices. Car is mint with 90k (and new clutch now!).
Peace!

$700 is a good price.
90k isn't abnormal, my Legend had its clutch changed every 50k according to the service records I got with the car, it was 45k, 110k, and then i replaced it shortly after getting the car @ 168k. on the legend its almost a 2k job.
I just did a clutch on another Legend for a customer, it had 122k, original clutch.

700 is NOT a good price to get your clutch replaced if ur going oem. You can find an OEM clutch for 150 or so or even an aftermarket stage one clutch, and labor shouldnt be more than 200 or 250. 700 to replace a clutch, i'd tell them to kiss my ***!

sounds about right. I checked the shop manual for my lude yesterday.....need to install shocks, long story....and i saw a clutch job is 5.9 hours. I would imagine CL is almost the same. 700 with parts is fair i think, especially if you mechanic is as good as you say he is.

Labor sounds about right, man you have bad luck with that CL. But 90K on a clutch isn't bad, is it still the original?

I drove a lot of my friends' sticks cars (Subarus, Toyotas, even domestic stick cars), and I found my OEM clutch to be extremely precise and easy to use, even for an old one. My friend who owns a 2008 Jetta stick shift confessed he found my clutch with 75.000 on it (when he tried it) to be better than his! That's why I'm going back OEM. I rlly think they're awesome clutches!

90K isn't really premature for a clutch man, that's a lot of years and wear

sometimes its not the distance you have driven. time does its own thing. the pucks heat up and 10 years later they dry up and crack. they pretty much crumbble. 90k plus 10 years is pretty good

Yea 220 is too much when you could get it cheaper, I got mine Exedy-kit for 100 bucks, as for the labor free; me and my buddy knock that bitch out but I guess he likes to spoil his mechanic.

when i bought my car the clutch had already been replaced at 60k. it was the dudes first car so i think he learned and screwed up one hell of a lot on the first clutch. But 90 k's not bad at all. longest clutch i had was on my legend 140k and then the odometer broke before i needed a new clutch lol. i miss that thing tho

Advanced
Doing a clutch is quite a bit of labor. $480 (6 hours at $80/hr) for labor plus $220 for an oem clutch, pressure plate and throw out bearing for a total of $700 is a about right. Id be skeptical if it were any less.

Why would you be skeptical. On my first CL i paid 120 for the oem replacement clutch and 325 for labor and it came out to 475 and the clutch was greatttt for thousands of miles. Same for the stock clutch i had on my current CL until i did the swap.
