1997 CL 3.0 ABS light

The light comes on several seconds after starting the engine.

I just bought this car...only 57,000 miles. The previous owner said the light came on after the front brakes were changed.

A couple friends said to disconnect the battery for ten minutes...didn't help.

I pulled each wheel off and the LEFT wheel outside CV joint boot leaked a lot of grease on the sprocket-like wheel for the speed sensor and on the speed sensor itself. The metal band on the boot isn't tight enough. I used brake cleaner to get as much grease off as possible but haven't had time to do more than that.

I also tested the brakes by braking hard and just before stopping, the RIGHT front tire locks up both times that I did it.

I've also been reading here about the o-ring in the abs pump.

Any clues from what I've seen so far? Thanks, Ron

From the ABS issues I had and from what you describe, my guess would be that the speed sensor is bad.

^ I agree it's almost always a wheel speed sensor, I've replaced 3 of mine, and the other one is bad now

Without having a tester, is there anyway I can tell what speed sensor is bad? My only clue was the right front wheel locking up right before the car stopped.

You will have to have someone pull the code for you, I've been putting off doing it for a year or 2, but I don't drive my CL that much

Here's an update...l used a paper clip to short the blue connector under the dash and got a DTC code of "1". That sent me to the modulator where I found it had no break fluid.

I added brake fluid and now the ABS comes on immediately and stays on where before it could come on for a few seconds, then off for say 15 seconds then on again.

Sound familiar to anyone?

Update...the steady ABS light was caused by me putting the ABS 15A fuse into an unused slot when I was resetting power to try to clear the fault.

Last update....no more ABS light...looks like adding brake fluid was all it needed.

OK. I haven't really looked into it much yet but when I start my car the abs light comes on a few seconds after. You can also hear a click from behind the glove box I believe. Any way my abs does not work. I found that out during a nice rain storm. I'm replacing my trans right now so I figured I might as well fix what I can afford to fix right now. Any ideas? Maybe a relay? That's what I thought the click may be

It's almost always a WSS. Another thing that can trigger it is if your brake fluid is even the slightest bit low
