17's or 18's?
17's or 18's?
hi there, i currently have the factory size rim/tires on a 97 acura cl 3.0, i find the car to already be low, I'd like to beef it up abit, and wondering if i should go with 17 or 18"? Some say go with 18's, i just don't want to lose any performance/power, i think the suggested size for 18's was 215/40-18, any suggestions would be appreciated.

18 with a thinner tire (40 series) isn't going to gain you much since it's about the same width as the stock 16's given the differences. You'd be better off getting a 45 or 50 series, any bigger than that and they would rub

yeaaaaa, so do I. except when i bottom out like a biatch. and if i hear one more person ask if i have 20"s
and the for the next person that says "well why didnt you just do 20"s
jk kinda people piss me off these days with stupid sh!t. my alarm got set off at school this morning, then i see some bastard touch my car as he walks by it an hour later. his freakin ipod was so loud he didnt know he set off my alarm.
k guys, i was gonna go with 18's if i could without losing any performance, so 18's it will be. Now i just realized from this site http://www.rims-n-tires.com/rt_specs.jsp
that the stock size is the same height the suggested 18" size of 215/40-18, so the car will still be sitting low and seem smaller for a midsize sedan, am i right or wrong? i do know the width is pretty significant with stock being 5" and using 18's gives you about 8", are there any other 18" sizes that i can go with that might give me a beefier look without losing performance or handling?

ok so if i go with 215/40-18 4-114mm, will the acura sit higher up? i know it's designed to sit low, and tends to have that samller sport coupe stature compared to other midsized coupes, it's prabably not smaller but it sorta looks that way, probably cause it sits lower than most.
I don't want to lose acceleration or handling, i want to beef the stance of the acura, and have it sitting higher up, without having to adjust the suspension, and wondering if !8" would make a difference, or a different size in 18" that will work as well?

yes it will make the car look like its sitting higher up. i dropped my car almost to the frame before putting on 19"s. when i put the rims on it brought my car UP quite a bit. if it gives you any help im running 225/35/19 in the front (rubberbands) and 225/40/19 (much thicker) in the rear.
running thin ass tires.18s are big enough IMO
I have 17", with a drop they look good. and they're lighter.

any rimshop, tire kingdom, walmart, craigslist, ebay. rims are everywhere. search for an audio shop or something. you cannot run a 225/40/19 as it is too thick for the front. rear is ok but not the front. it will rub inside the tirewell and possibly the outside too. i have 225/35/19 on the front and rub on the inside still. if you want to drop or already have then it will be impossible for a 40 series tire up front.
remember, the sidewall of a tire is a function of the width of the rim. Sorry if I missed it, but you haven't stated how wide the rims are that you're desiring.
So it all depends in how wide the rim is.
Generally speaking, 40 series tire is the sweet spot for the trade off between performance, looks, and ride comfort. Trust me, there's a HUGE difference once you jump to a 35 series or below...the ride is exponentially stiffer and your risks of bending/cracking a rim goes up.
I run 205/40/18 up front and 225/40/18 out back, but keep in mind my front rims are 8 inches wide and rears are 9 inches wide, so there's a real good stretch on there so that the rims fit and I don't have to roll fenders.
225/40 should be fine as long as your rims are between 8 and 9 inches wide. on an 8 inch rim, it will be pretty squared, and on a 9, you'll notice a good amount of stretch. Don't be affraid to ride on stretched tires either, it's really not unsafe at all unless you go all ass-out like the vdubb and s14 guys.

well it's either 225/40/18 or 225/35/18, i suppose the 35 series is a more common size, but to be honest i don't like more rim less tire on the sidewall, i just don't want to lose acceleration or handling, but wanna beef the stance up, with no rub, before making a purchase for 4 new rims/tires i want to be sure i make the right choice in size, hope this helps others too as well!

less tire would be 35, so it sounds like you'd prefer 40, anyway.
maybe you're confused about this, or maybe i'm drunk and having trouble with reading comprehension.
basically, 40 is what everyone will suggest, as you will have more tire on your wheels, and thus, be less likely to fuck your shit up.
go with the 40s and call it a day mang.
you're still not stating how wide the rims you are wanting to get are.
THE SIDEWALL SIZE only has to do with the width of the rim....so your stretch/fit/overall characteristics with a 225/40 vs. 225/35 will depend on how wide the rim is that you are trying to put on it.
Jesus...just post how wide the rims are already...

i'm getting brand new rims and tires, so the width of the rim won't be a problem, I've decided to go with four new 225/40/18 tires, i'll get the proper rim size to fit, i'll probably end up buying tire/rim bundle package online or something, saves me the time of making sure tires and rims will fit with eachother. Thanks to all who gave advice, if anyone knows where to get low priced rim/tire combos in Canada or the US let me know, thanks.
hi. im still a litttle confused about the rims maybe because i dont speak english well.. ? whatever.. here is whats confusing me... you are saying that if you lokking for new rims u have to look at wide of the rime also. i thought wide of the rim is same as wide of the tire for examle 215,225, 235 blah.. blah.. u guys told me that im not going to get 19's with 40 profile( i dont want to go less) allright but sometimes when i look online at rims as 225/40/18 the webside says that this rim doesnt fit... that is propably because of the rim wide!??? for example http://www.wheelfire.com/scontent/Wh...200&CheckFit=1
this rim right there is 8.5 wide !!
http://www.wheelfire.com/scontent/Wh...831&CheckFit=1
this one doesnt fit either and its just 7.5 !!
what about if i dop my car can i fit bigger rims ? or more wide?
i thought because of dropp u have less space for your tire .. thank u for explain !
