For those of you from TL to MDX

so im going to be in the market for a larger car now that i have the house and need to make home depot runs (you should see the look i get when i have sheetrock and doors tied down to the roof of the TL and GS) and i will be getting married early next year so kids will eventually be on the way within a few years...

so for those of you guys that have come from the TL, how's the ride, power difference, etc?

i like the MDX because it has 7 seating capability so i don't have to go full blown Honda Oddassy... and im prob going to mod the X where available... and from my search, there isn't much... but i guess priorities change in life...

TIA...

Wow, going to an MDX from a TL before you are married with children!? The shock of marriage is one thing, but going from a sedan to an SUV would be too much for most guys. I say stick with the TL to see if the marriage works; if so then buy the new ZDX--the best of both worlds!!!

We went from a TL (we still have it actually) to the RL, then a year later picked up the new MDX. Since i drive mostly the TL and drive the MDX occasionally in Toronto (That's where it the X is) I can tell you a bit of the differences, however I have an 02 TL, not an 07, So the help may not be too much. (However we have an 06 RL A-Spec)

The MDX is basically a heightened RL in a sense. The AWD system really does help with the handling, the power flows very well. Being higher up really does have it's advantages. It's got a bit more power than the TL but is definitely more sluggish to the version you have (It's actually faster than my 02 and a bit slower than the RL)

The leather is nice, i'm a larger guy so the seats fit me perfectly, much better than the sedans. The cargo room is decent however I MUST STRESS that this is NOT a good replacement for a van.

For an SUV this is a great vehicle and is high enough in winter, the AWD is fantastic, however any tall objects or long objects will cause you to be angry with this truck. Odyssey's (what was replaced with by the MDX) are much longer and larger and perhaps we are used to it, but the X was not able to perform in this matter. It is good for me, but not for my uncle who uses it as a minivan.

So i stress that this isn't a replacement for a van, especially if you're used to the van. However since you're starting a family soon and getting married, the MDX should provide for all your needs.

It's larger, but can still be fun in the corners (I wouldn't doubt that it might even be able to keep up in the corners with your TL because of the AWD system). It looks really good. The gas mileage is bearable, but you'll feel the difference between your TL.

It still drives like a larger car, highway cruising is fantastic and you don't feel the speed at all. The tiptronic (No paddle shifters made me sad) really does add to the experience in passing and taking corners...definitely love it for long drives.

P.S. I say ditch the GS instead

P.P.S. extreme rear seats are decent for kids under the age of like 12....otherwise it's cramped.

are you talking 1st gen or 2nd gen? I have an '03 X and a 3G TL.. The X definitely has some grunt & decent handling.. I've honestly only used the 3rd row seating twice. It will uncomfortably fit 2 adults back there.. kids no problem.

I've taken several road trips with it packed to the top and it has been great and a lot of fun. The TL is a lot of fun too, but if I had to pick I would go with the X. I've barely had any issues with X as well.. the only downside is there's not too many mods out there for the X, which is probably a blessing.

edit: the dogs love the X as well.. especially with 2nd row flattened out..

Funny you mentioned TL & MDX in the same thread as that's what we're housing in the garage now ... MDX is more fun to drive than RXH, but still no match to my TLS ... very nice SUV to haul stuff like my rugrats, nothing more nothing less ...

i have an 05 TL and an 08 MDX. I also do a lot of Lowes runs and am often frustrated with the lack of cargo space (i came from an 05 pathfinder)

For the most part it works but the kicker was when I couldnt get that 50" plasma form Best Buy until I completely unboxed it and sat it on teh rear seat which was scarred by the edge of the tv

anyway, teh MDX is great , just dont think you're gonna haul anything too big - at least not in the cargo area

Went from a 2007 TL to a 2008 MDX. Loved the upgrade to an SUV. Tons of room for the family and for a large SUV, the handling is exceptional, especially around corners. Would take a TL < 2009 around a sharp corner at high speeds any time of the day. Off the line, TL would take it.

I bought the MDX for room and utility.

I have a TL and an MDX, I gave the MDX to the wifey and kept the TL for myself (kind selfish...I know) but I let her take the TL to work a couple times a week when I have to pick up or drop off the baby! Anyways, the MDX is a sweet ride and I would highly recommend it.

I have an 02 MDX and suggest you to get the tech package with reverse camera. I backed up into my own 90 gal large garbage bin because I couldn't see it. The height of the garbage bin sits just below the rear view window. Luckily, there's only a minor scratch. For this reason, I have installed an aftermarket reverse camera via a video interface unit, which includes an extra video input for dvd player. I can now sing along with the karaoke dvd's on the road

Later on, you'd need to install the running board for the kids to climb in and out. Good luck.

Previous '06 TL owner here, my Dad just picked up a 2009 MDX, my first impression hopping in the rear seat to check it out was how limited cargo space was. Rear passenger room was limited, I can't imagine how much worse it might be for those in the fold up seats. I must say for an SUV it doesn't seem large enough, I felt that the new Accord Sedan has much more rear leg room.

The only rear benefit the MDX has is that the rear seats fold down, but then again if I recall correctly they can fold down in the TL as well.

Ahhhh, no sir...the 3rd gen TL seats do not fold down. It only has a center pass-thru.

I prefer the MDX (2008) to the TL (2007) for its height, utility, and space. The TL is more responsive if you are a spirited driver. However, the MDX is quite sporty in my opinion. I don't have kids so the third row seat in the MDX is permanently folded down. On long road trip, the MDX is the vehicle of choice. It is correct to say that it is a great cruising vehicle on the high way. You will most likely not feel how fast you are going. I don't tow anything with the MDX, but judging from picture above it has a sizable towing capacity.

When we bought the MDX, we considered similar vehicles from the other luxury manufacturers. The MDX was the clear winner, balancing performance, value, size, luxury, technology and appearance. It also has a high reputation for reliability from the previous model. However, I particularly like Honda so take the last statements with a large grain of salt.

I must say I went from an 06 TL to an 07 MDX and I was pleased, the SHAWD is awesome! I don't have kids but the spare room comes in handy for carrying stuff especially when going to places like Ikea. I would still like a sporty little car though because as good as the shawd is the mdx is still an suv. Oh and I hate the new grills.

I went from an 2004 MDX Touring to a 2009 MDX Touring with Sport and the dumb TV. I liked the MDX that much. But I own a 350 Ford Van for moving mid-size stuff. I can't imagine people considering hauling 50" TV's or building materials in such a classy vehicle.
