Moonoof exploded randmonly
The moonroof in my wife's MDX expldoded today. Just rained glass on her. We don't think it was anthing hitting the window. There was no hail or anthing.
It was cold outside, and she had the heat on high.
Anyways I'm nervous Acura is not going to want to cover it under warranty. I think its a deflect in the glass.
They want $1,050 to fix it. Damn. It was definitly not broken due to 'road hazards'.

i'm not too familiar with the MDX, but i just replaced the sunroof on my 07 acura tl...found one used for $48 shipped. check junk yards, etc.
i have read that this happens because of a manufacturing defect.

Wow scary stuff hope ya'll r alright. I had my sun roof shatter and blow in to my 94 integra at 130-135 mph luckly I had the sun shade close because the sun shade hit my girl friend and I in the head and the air flow over the car ripped the glass off the car and throw it about 30ft into the air lucky it was late and the road was relatively deserted. Mine was covered by my auto insurance (comp and collision) I think. Hopefully yours is covered as well and it's back on the road soon good luck.

Good news. Acura Canada agreed to warranty the part. They are paying for the moonroof which is the bulk of the expense, and I just have to cover the labour. They said they didn't have to do it, but they wanted to do it as I have been a good customer.
I heard its manufacturing defect, happens on the bmw forum Im on also and search shows other manufacturer also.

I've had a side window on my last family hauler explode randomly. Thankfully my kids were not in it at the time. It does happen occasionally due to extreme temps at both ends of the spectrum. Glad to hear Acura Canada is covering most of the expense.
The problem is that it is tempered glass so even the slightest defect in combination with the right kind of impact or temperature change can result in what you have witnessed. It is a common, if infrequent, problem among all vehicles with tempered glass in either the form of a moonroof or the all glass roof on some more recent vehicles.
Take it to the dealership and at least check with them to see if they will replace it under warranty or at least good will.

Wondered if windshield was also tempered, Googled and found this explanation:
"All windshields have three layers. You have a glass in the inside and a another glass in the outside. Both of these glass layers sandwich a strong vinyl layer called PVB (poly vinyl butry), in language terms it's a strong lamination.
"When impact occurs on the outer glass, the lamination is intact to hold the break together, resulting in a crack. Tempered glass OTOH is in a state of compression. It's made in very hot temperatures and then it's rapidly cooled. This is why when it breaks it's in pieces, which is called "dicing."
"Tempered glass can only be found in your side and back glass (and I assume moonoof :-). The purpose for tempered glass is for safety evacuation in case of an emergency where the doors won't open and the only way out is thru the window. Tempered glass makes it easier to break in such cases. Now these days more and more luxury cars are coming out with laminated side windows, but only the two front side windows will be laminated...... for instance the Mercedes Benz S500.
"So the bottom line is, YES, the front windshield is laminated by law according to FMVSS (Federal Motor vehicle Safety Standard)."
