D5 flashing... going to get timing belt changed???

Hi I'm new to this community and i'm trying not be ripped off by the Honda dealership. I bought my 2003 Acura MDX from a whilesaler in 2009 with 99k miles. It now has over 177k. It hasnt had a major problem yet. Recently I've noticed that abritarlly the d5 would start flashing after some sortt of downshift. This was curious to me at first but now its starting to worry me. It just seems to 'kick' out of the blue. So I took it in to the Honda dealership because I thought Honda and Acura same thing just different labor charges. They told me that this because there's no record of timing belt change that could be the issue. I dont know waht the problem codes are and dont want to pay for something that isnt the real problem. Can anyone lend assistance as to what it could be? Is it my transmission going and if thats the case what are my options? is it something else? I live in Metro Boston so I can get everything locally here. Please advise as I have an appointment with Honda in 2 days.

Is it possible to pull the transmission error code(s) out by shorting a plug, and then by reading the blinking intervals of the D5 light ?
