Tire Package

When we purchased a ZDX Type S maybe 2 months ago, the sales person wanted to sell us a tire package (besides other things). I think it include service if you scratch your rims, etc. If you bought it, how much did you pay for it and has anyone added such a package later on?

Usually you need to be either very careless, or very unfortunate, to recoup the expense on those packages. You pay for the convenience.

Dealerships make big profits on those packages, so make sure you negotiate hard. They should be more than happy to sell you one post-purchase for the same reason. They usually contract out the service, and what that means depends on the priority of each dealership.

I was torn, honestly, on getting that coverage or not. I tend to say "no". But on the 2018 Accord we got rid of when we bought the ZDX I had one badly damaged rim. Once due to my wife, once due to me. Somehow, same rim both times (how did I manage that?). In the end I said no, decided I would self-insure on the unlikely event we damage a rim. And give me an excuse to put some after-market rims on it.

I will say that here in southeast Pennsylvania there are some places that do a very good job on rim repair for around $125 to $300 depening on extent of damage. The biggest issue is they need the wheel off the car for several days. Before selling my last Porsche I had a wheel with about a 4 inch “road rash” and it was $150. After the repair you really could not see and damage.

@John from PA We live in the San Francisco bay area so I suspect prices here are higher. But thank you very much for the information. Were the rims on your Porsche the "natural" color or did they have to "paint" the part they had to fix? Our rims are black so fixing them will require some "painting".

@billjay I always say no to all of those add-ons. But two months in and we already have some scratches on one rim. The rims on our Infiniti are pretty scratched up. Granted, it's more than 10 years old but those scratches would really stand out on black rims.

How much do those tire "protection" packages cost after negotiation for x years?

I said no to everything, so don't remember the numbers. I vaguely recall original quote on ding/dent protection was close to $2k, then without me asking, the second offer came down to closer to $1k.

In Bay Area, the top end of wheel repair is $200-300 per wheel. For small scratches, some can do around $100.

My rims were what you refer to as a "natural" color but there was a clear topcoat.
